Cristina García P’14, author of seven novels including Dreaming in Cuban, finalist for the National Book Award, is the proud parent of Pilar Garcia-Brown ’14. Ms. García also shares a lot of gratitude to the associate director of admission and dear friend, Mercedes Domenech, who has helped nurture an incredible diversity of talent especially for Latinx students. Ms. Domenech has changed the landscape for admitted students and continues to be a role model for change.

Inspired by Ms. Domenech's work and legacy at Brown, Cristina included the University in her estate plan. “She provided the invitation and the net that helped sustain people in that transition, often difficult, from backgrounds that were historically starkly different from typical Brown or Ivy League students.”

In finalizing her estate plan, Cristina chose to include Brown because she saw firsthand the difference a Brown education makes. “I do feel that I continue to have a long-term perspective on what a Brown education can mean for those lucky enough to get one. And so for me, it's not something that began in 2010 and ended in 2014, it's something that is ongoing. It’s long-term value continues to impress me.”

By making a planned gift to Brown, Cristina knew she would be helping students long into the future. “I think a gift to Brown now is not just for my daughter or even her daughter but for all the daughters, all the sons and daughters and children, everybody coming down the pike. Because you pass it on, you pass that baton again and again, and I think we all can make the world a little better in this way.”

David “Chi” Chichester ‘67 was originally recruited to play basketball and soccer at Brown. Goal-keeping for the soccer team became his passion and the focus of his athletic career at Brown. A generous financial aid package from the University made his life-changing undergraduate experience possible.

A native of Long Island, Chi found his community at Brown through friendships forged with teammates, fraternity brothers, and classmates with whom he later served in the Vietnam War. As an alumnus, he has mentored current and former student-athletes and hosted the soccer team at his home in Washington state.

Now as co-president of the Brown Sports Foundation Board of Directors, chair of the men’s soccer association, and a member of the President’s Advisory Council on Athletics, he actively volunteers his time to improve athletics for current and future Brown Bears. In 2008, Chi established a Charitable Remainder Trust, which provides him with an income for life and an immediate charitable deduction. The trust is invested in Brown’s endowment, and he receives 6% of the trust’s assets each year, helping diversify his portfolio for retirement. The trust assets will eventually support the Men’s Soccer Endowment.

Chi is proud to give back to the institution that continues to be at the heart of some of his deepest connections.

JOSÉ “PEPE” AMOR Y VÁZQUEZ, A NATIVE OF RIBADEO (Galicia, Spain), was a beloved scholar of Hispanic literature and history who made Brown University and the John Carter Brown Library (JCB) his second home. His life and career took him from Spain to Cuba to Venezuela and finally to Providence, where he arrived to begin his PhD in Hispanic Studies in 1951—later becoming an assistant professor in the same department in 1958.

Professor Amor y Vázquez’s experience of transatlantic migration informed his scholarship, which bridged the study of Spanish peninsular, Caribbean, and Latin American literatures. He was also one of the founders of Brown’s Center for Latin American Studies.

In 1998 he formed the José Amor y Vázquez Endowment Fund to underwrite programs and projects related to Spanish and Spanish American subjects, including fellowships, lectures, acquisitions, publications, cataloguing, and the like.

Finally, upon his death, Pepe made a significant bequest to further increase his endowment fund at the JCB as well as support for the University libraries.

As part of Pride Month, we are featuring the story of two Brown alumni. Scott Westerfield ’79 and Ed Miskevich ’79 met as students, and they say their leadership and activism had roots in their Brown experience too. They have now chosen to make a planned gift that will support both faculty and the LGBTQ Center at Brown, paying it forward for the experiences and education they received more than 40 years ago.
“I know what Brown can do. I think when we invest in students, the future of the world will change.” - Ed Miskevich ’79

For Scott Westerfield ’79 and Ed Miskevich ’79, Brown wasn't just where it all began: it's where it was all made possible.
