Watch Just Equations National Policy Director Andrea McChristian speak about their new report "Calculated Barriers: Examining the History Behind Math Inequities Facing Black Students." Link to the report is in the first comment.

"For far too long math has functioned as one of the most powerful gatekeepers in our education system, with students from historically underrepresented communities bearing the brunt of systemic inequities. For black students in particular, disparities in math education are the result of policies and practices intentionally designed to restrict access and opportunity. Our new report traces the history of these math disparities, how they continue to hinder black students, and importantly, how stakeholders at the institution level, the state level, and the national level can take action to dismantle barriers and ensure equitable outcomes for black students."

The Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) values the many different perspectives and experiences of people who make up the mathematical sciences community. In recognition of the richness of our community, we are accepting nominations from individuals who would like to be featured during various Heritage Months throughout the year. In particular, we are seeking self-nominations from people who would like to be highlighted for either Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month or Jewish American Heritage Month this May, and for Pride Month in June.

https://forms.gle/XGKKc7SjWpDzb8qx5

Please fill out the form to nominate yourself. Please note that we are only accepting SELF nominations at this time. If there is a Heritage Month not listed on the form for which you would like to be considered, please indicate that on the form.

Today the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) is pleased to feature Angelynn Álvarez for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month.

Dr. Álvarez is a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Mathematics in the Embry-Riddle Prescott College of Arts & Sciences at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Arizona. Her current research interests include algebraic coding theory and information theory, as well as algebraic and differential geometry, and she is passionate about connecting deep mathematical ideas with meaningful mentorship and student support. Álvarez earned her Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Houston, and remains actively engaged in research, teaching, and service within the mathematical community.

As an AAPI mathematician, Álvarez values the importance of visibility, representation, and community in STEM. She is committed to fostering inclusive spaces in mathematics through mentorship, outreach, and leadership, including service and support for initiatives that encourage women and underrepresented students in mathematics. Originally from Brooklyn, New York and raised in New Jersey by immigrant parents, Professor Álvarez hopes to inspire students to see mathematics not only as a field of discovery, but also as a place where they belong.

Outside of mathematics, Álvarez enjoys reading mystery novels, practicing yoga, lifting weights, and hiking with her husband and their two dogs. She considers herself a “lifelong learner” both inside and outside the classroom.

Today the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) is pleased to feature Dr. Tatheer Ajani for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month.

Professor Ajani, a Dallas native born to Indian immigrant parents, is a full-time lecturer at The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA). She received her PhD in Mathematics with a focus in Homological Algebra from UTA in 2025. She also received her master's and bachelor's degrees in mathematics from the same institution, so you could say she loves it there! When she is not teaching her lovely students, she spends her time watching tv with family, doing jigsaw puzzles, watching hockey (go Stars!), going to the gym, and dabbling in photography.

Dr. Ajani developed her love for math early on in her life in 5th grade, when another math teacher down the hall presented her with a problem about the area of a rectangle, with some variables added in. She was immediately intrigued and it made her view math as a puzzle waiting to be solved. Since then, she has actively pursued math, taking as many math classes as she could through her grade school career, and with a couple of detours, ended up becoming a math major in undergrad and even served as an officer for the AWM student chapter at UTA. She published an undergraduate thesis in 2020, making her realize she wanted to go further and go to graduate school. She had an amazing experience at UTA, and decided to stay to pursue a PhD.

In her time since, she has presented talks and posters at numerous conferences, acted as a mentor to undergraduate and graduate students alike, and since becoming a faculty member, has become the faculty advisor to a hockey fan club and serves on multiple committees within her department. She aims to cultivate an inviting culture for her students and colleagues.

This year marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of French mathematician Sophie Germain.

Germain was from Paris and self-studied mathematics as a teenager, to the point that she could read the works of Newton and Euler. While not allowed to attend mathematics lectures at the Ecole Polytechnique, Germain was able to advance her studies by obtaining course notes. Using a male pseudonym she corresponded with both Lagrange and Gauss, who later learned of her true identity and then promoted her work. Germain made significant contributions to efforts to prove Fermat's Last Theorem, and also to elasticity. She was the first woman to win a prize from the Paris Academy of Sciences. The French Academy of Sciences awards an annual Sophie Germain Prize.
