This summer, students from Summer Prep Providence had the unique opportunity to step inside the world of business and manufacturing during a special visit to Matouk’s headquarters in Fall River, Massachusetts.

Matouk is a family-owned luxury linens company known for its high-quality bedding and home products. CEO George Matouk welcomed the students and shared the story of the company, providing an inside look at what it takes to build and lead a successful business.

Students toured the facility, seeing firsthand how Matouk’s products are made and learning about the many steps involved in bringing a product from concept to completion. Along the way, they were introduced to the wide range of careers that help the company succeed—from design and manufacturing to operations and human resources. Students also learned about Matouk’s deep commitment to sustainability and its investment in the local community.

Experiences like this are an important part of Summer Prep, exposing students to new industries, workplaces, and career possibilities while helping them make connections between their education and their future goals.

We are grateful to George Matouk and the entire Matouk team for opening their doors to CV and providing our students with such a rich and memorable learning experience.

This summer, CV Summer Prep, our five-week college and career exploration program, expanded to Newport in partnership with the Community College of Rhode Island's Newport County Campus. Newport became Summer Prep’s third site, joining Providence and Woonsocket and marking another important milestone in CV’s continued growth across Rhode Island.

Throughout the five-week program, 20 high school students from Newport and Middletown participated in project-based learning, college tours, career exploration, professional skill development, and personal and academic goal setting. These experiences gave students opportunities to explore their interests, envision new possibilities for their futures, and build the skills and confidence to pursue them.

Highlights included:

A mock college class on cybersecurity with CCRI Professor Mike Kelly

A career visit to Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island

Mock interviews with professionals from a range of companies, including Citizens, Cox Communications/Spectrum, BankNewport, Rhode Island Energy, and Consilio LLC

A campus visit to the University of Rhode Island

For Bellarose, a student at The Met High School in Newport, Summer Prep helped transform uncertainty about the future into greater confidence and direction.

“When I first started the program, I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted to do after high school,” Bellarose shared at the Summer Prep graduation. “College Visions helped me become more confident, communicate my ideas more effectively, and better understand the college process. I learned that preparing for the future is also about building confidence, developing life skills, and believing in yourself.”

With this expansion to Newport, CV is creating more opportunities for first-generation students like Bellarose to explore what’s possible, build confidence in their abilities, and begin charting a path toward college and a meaningful career.

This September, we're honoring Kolajo Paul Afolabl, who was a volunteer, donor, and board member at College Visions, for his dedication to supporting first-gen students. When he passed away in 2011, we named our College Success Program in his honor to keep his work alive.

Today, CV Scholars in the Kolajo Paul Afolabi College Success Program are graduating at rates far above the state average: 92% persist to their second year and 70% graduate within six years.
