Before joining our Powwow celebration, our Executive Director, Darrell Waldron, participated in the unveiling of the Tarzan Brown statue, now proudly located at the Westerly Train Station.

Moments like these remind us how important it is to celebrate one another, recognize those who came before us, and continue supporting each other as we preserve and strengthen our communities for future generations. Together, we honor the past while building a stronger future.

What a beautiful day with beautiful people. ❤️🪶

The Rhode Island Indian Council, as an intertribal Urban Indian organization, is always honored to celebrate and welcome tribes from across the East Coast. Our powwows bring together tribal communities in a spirit of unity, culture, healing, and community.

Thank you to everyone who supported our powwow—whether you shared our event, attended in person, volunteered, vended, danced, sang, or simply stopped by to learn and celebrate with us. Every person helped make the day special.

This was our first time at 195 District Park, and we are grateful for the opportunity to share our traditions, culture, and good medicine in the heart of Providence.

Until September—we’ll see you again soon. ❤️🪶

This Saturday, we invite Native people from across our communities to join us for our Powwow as we gather to celebrate our cultures, strengthen our connections, and discuss our future.

We also want to take a moment to address the imagery used in our event flyer. The image depicts Myles Standish marching through Plymouth carrying the head of Wituwamat. We chose this image to encourage both Native and non-Native people to confront a difficult but important part of this country's history and to reflect on what Native communities have experienced since first contact.

As the United States marks 250 years, we ask: What exactly is being celebrated, and what has that history meant for Native people?

RIIC has traveled across the country and witnessed Native communities continuing to struggle for access to healthcare, housing, education, cultural preservation, economic opportunity, and the recognition that many should have received generations ago.

Does that not concern you? Does that not want you to create change?

This flyer was never intended to offend. Its purpose is to spark conversation and reflection around important questions:

• What comes next for Native people?
• How do we move beyond survival toward healing, self-determination, and prosperity?
• What responsibilities do institutions and governments have in supporting Native communities moving forward?

While these conversations are not always easy, they are necessary.

We encourage Native people from all communities to join us in support, to be part of these larger conversations, and to celebrate the resilience, strength, and endurance of our people.

We hope to see you there.

This event is free to the public!
