The U.S. Maternal Healthcare Crisis is Racial, Social, and Economic Issue
Black women are 3x more likely to die in childbirth than White women.
Thatโs why the team at the Business Innovation Factory (BIF) could not stand idly by, we had to take action and use our knowledge and know-how and apply it to this crisis. As a non-profit we have for the last 15 years, worked on over 70 projects, helping other organizations design ways to solve tough problems for the communities they serve.
This time it was our turn to work in our own community, BIF designed a Maternal Wellbeing Program that put women in charge of their care, we know they are the experts of their own bodies, and the women know when something is wrong. Itโs time that the institutionalized healthcare system became allies and put their trust with the women where it belongs. The program called LunaYou launched in RI with 25 pregnant women on medicaid and runs throughout 2020.
The core components of the program are:
Personal Empowerment: Empowering each woman to take charge of her pregnancy journey, with the confidence that she can influence better outcomes.
Circles of Support: Facilitating the connection of a small group of family and friends to support each woman on her pregnancy journey.
Trusted Spaces: Catalyzing a micro-culture of racial sensitivity, respect and honest communication to lessen the stress of interacting with todayโs healthcare system while working with providers to address biases.
Wellbeing Dashboard: Enabling direct and trusted access to a real-time flow of information relevant to a womanโs maternal health and wellbeing, and her pregnancy.
We hope you will join us and the women on this journey by supporting LunaYou, as we empower women to be their own advocate, provide them a circle of support from peers, family, and friends, and equip them with the right tools to promote physical and emotional health.
