As Hispanic Heritage Month comes to a close, we’re honoring Marta Martínez (b. 1957), a community historian and archivist who has spent decades preserving Latinx stories in Rhode Island. 📚✨

As Executive Director of Rhode Island Latino Arts (RILA), Martínez founded Nuestras Raíces, a Latino oral history project that creates vital space for cultural memory, language, and storytelling. Her work documents the lives and contributions of Latino people across generations, ensuring their histories are recognized, celebrated, and preserved for the future.

Last Thursday night, The Alcove After Dark proved it.

The Portrait Gallery was full of friends old and new. La Donna Musicale and RUMBARROCO brought the whole room to life with their music, Sydney Darrow's live charcoal portraits sent guests home with a one-of-a-kind keepsake, and our curated raffle added a little luck and a lot of fun to the evening.

This month, we're welcoming our first Beyond the Bio duo: Akanksha Aga and Kristen Adamo!

Akanksha grew up in India and came to the U.S. to pursue her master's and the "American Dream." Today she's a hospitality veteran, a professor, and the founder of Breaking Bread, a nonprofit that helps people grow their careers through mentoring.

Kristen, President and CEO of the Providence Warwick Convention & Visitors Bureau, has spent nearly two decades shaping how the world sees Providence and has helped guide the organization through the pandemic.

This week, Sandra Cano taught us that a life doesn't come together in a straight line but rather like a puzzle 🧩 ✨

From Medellín to Providence, Sandra walked us through her journey towards becoming an advocate and civil servant. She shared (literal) pieces of her heritage and career, helping form the picture of exactly who Sandra is today!
