As we celebrate Pride Month, we’re honoring Edith "Edie" Windsor (1929 - 2027), whose courage and determination reshaped the legal landscape for LGBTQ+ people across the United States 🌈✨
After the death of her wife, Thea Spyer, Windsor challenged the Defense of Marriage Act in a landmark Supreme Court case. The Court’s ruling expanded federal recognition of same-sex marriages and helped create momentum for lasting change.
Just two years later, that momentum contributed to the Supreme Court’s decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, affirming that same-sex couples have the fundamental right to marry on equal terms under the Constitution.
🖼️ Her portrait by Patricia Jurkowski is currently on view in our Portrait Gallery as part of our "Founders and Inventors Who Shaped the World" exhibition.
