As we celebrate Pride Month, we’re honoring Edith "Edie" Windsor (1929 - 2027), whose courage and determination reshaped the legal landscape for LGBTQ+ people across the United States 🌈✨

After the death of her wife, Thea Spyer, Windsor challenged the Defense of Marriage Act in a landmark Supreme Court case. The Court’s ruling expanded federal recognition of same-sex marriages and helped create momentum for lasting change.

Just two years later, that momentum contributed to the Supreme Court’s decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, affirming that same-sex couples have the fundamental right to marry on equal terms under the Constitution.

🖼️ Her portrait by Patricia Jurkowski is currently on view in our Portrait Gallery as part of our "Founders and Inventors Who Shaped the World" exhibition.

Amazing Grace ✨🎖️

When Grace Hopper (1906–1992) first applied to join the U.S. Navy during World War II, she was denied because of her age and stature. She persisted, earned a commission in the Navy Reserves, and ultimately became one of the highest-ranking women in the service.

A computer scientist and rear admiral, Hopper helped develop COBOL (Common Business-Oriented Language), an early programming language that made computers more accessible beyond engineering and mathematics fields. Her work helped shape the future of technology as it moved into everyday life.

Known as “Amazing Grace,” Hopper continued serving into her seventies, retiring at age 79.

🖼️ Her portrait by Erin Lobb Mason is currently on view in our Portrait Gallery as part of our "Founders and Inventors Who Shaped the World" exhibition.

This is what The Alcove feels like. 🌿

Our second-floor members' space is where leaders, artists, activists, lawyers, and changemakers come to settle in, exhale, and connect.

Some come to work. Some come to rest. Most leave with a deeper conversation than they expected, and a few connections they didn’t see coming.

Membership at The Alcove includes:
☕ Access to the Haven and our complimentary beverage bar
📚 Library borrowing privileges from our Biographical Library
🌟 The chance to be in the room where things are happening

Membership starts at $25/month with all tiers receiving the same full benefits. Anything above that goes directly toward sustaining The Alcove and the work we do together.

We're proud to share that The Alcove was featured in The New York Times!

In "36 Hours in Providence" by Lauren Matison, The Alcove is named a Saturday morning must-visit.

Lauren visited on a Saturday, just like you can, and found a celebration of under-recognized women and gender expansive changemakers, including:

🖼️ A Portrait Gallery with 40+ portraits of founders and inventors
📚 A Biographical Library of 2,500+ leaders, thinkers, and innovators
⭐ All guided by the belief: if you can see it, you can be it

Our first floor is free and open to the public. We’ll see you on Saturdays starting June 6th!

You may be familiar with Pilar McCloud’s remarkable career—but who is she beyond her resume? ✨

This month, we’re honored to welcome Pilar McCloud: community leader, youth mentor, and civic advocate. For more than 20 years, Pilar has supported young people across Rhode Island through mentorship, advocacy, and community leadership.

Beyond the Bio is our speaker series dedicated to creating space for women and gender expansive people to share the experiences that shaped their paths—not just what they do, but what brought them there.

Join us for an evening of storytelling, thoughtful dialogue, and connection.
