Three of us attended Advanced Water Recovery class at Western Carolina University (Oct 2, 3 & 4, 2026). K9 Liberty & Lela, K9 Cash & JR and K9 Micha & Leona. Why do local law enforcement agencies sometimes hesitate to use free search resources?

In many cases, it comes down to liability concerns, chain of command, scene preservation, training verification, and making sure resources are credible, coordinated, and court-defensible. When a missing person case is active, agencies have to consider every decision carefully.

That said, well-trained volunteer resources can be a major asset when they are used appropriately.

Human remains detection K9s can help narrow search areas, reduce wasted time, and give investigators a more focused place to deploy divers, sonar, boats, ground teams, or additional resources. In water and shoreline searches especially, dogs may help identify a search zone much faster than blindly covering large areas.

When time matters, partnerships matter.

Using trained K9 teams and other qualified volunteer resources can help:

* cut down search time
* reduce manpower strain
* narrow large search areas
* support law enforcement with additional tools
* increase the chances of bringing answers to families sooner

Volunteer does not mean unqualified.
Free does not mean without value.

The goal is not to replace law enforcement — it is to support them, strengthen the search effort, and help find missing people as quickly and effectively as possible.

People deserve to be found.
And the best outcomes often happen when agencies and trained community resources work together.
