At MAVEE, our work has always centered on advancing women’s empowerment, with a strong focus on improving maternal health outcomes across Liberia. Over the years, we have remained committed to one important question: How can traditional birth attendants be meaningfully integrated into the formal healthcare system as trusted companions for pregnant women and new mothers while also receiving fair economic opportunities for their service?
This question has shaped our research, informed our advocacy, and inspired the development of innovative community-based solutions. It also continues to guide our ongoing work in Liberia.
As the Liberian Ministry of Health advances its 365 Days Plan, MAVEE sees a timely opportunity to contribute to national efforts aimed at strengthening maternal healthcare services. Through our groundbreaking OWN-CARE Model, we are creating a system that integrates traditional midwives into maternal care support structures while empowering them economically. The model is designed to improve maternal health outcomes without involving delivery services, ensuring safer and more supportive care for women and families.
To help bring this vision to life, MAVEE will host “The Taste of Liberty Food Festival” in December — a nationwide celebration of Liberian culture, food, and community. The festival will serve as a fundraising initiative to support the implementation of the OWN-CARE Program across Liberia.
As we continue finalizing plans with our partners in all 15 counties, more details about the event and our implementation strategy will be shared in the coming weeks.
