🐾 Birds, Bumpers & Basics – Week 2 🐾

Thursday night we’re back at Kaos Kennels for another great evening of retriever training!

This week we’ll be focusing on:
✔️ Walking to the Line
✔️ Line Manners
✔️ Focus Around Distractions
✔️ Building Confidence in Hunt Test-like Setups

We’ll continue working in a realistic hunting and hunt test setup to help dogs and handlers continue progressing together.

Whether you’re new to retriever training or already running hunt tests, come join us for a fun and educational night!

Lake Country Retriever Club HRC test will be held on May 30 and May 31, 2026
at the Minnesota Horse and Hunt Club, Prior Lake.
Entries are open on Hunt Secretary and close this Tuesday,May 19. We still have a spot for you!

Our Hunt Test weekend is almost here, and we’d love to encourage ALL members — especially newer members — to come out, watch, learn, and get involved!

This is a great opportunity to see firsthand how a hunt test operates, meet other members, learn the different volunteer roles, and observe dogs and handlers working in a real test environment. Whether you’re actively training, thinking about getting started, or simply curious about hunt tests, this is one of the best ways to learn.

🐾 Test Schedule

Friday - Owner Handler Qualifer
Saturday – Junior & Master Tests
Sunday – Junior & Senior Tests

⏰ All tests begin at 8:00 AM each day.

🙋 Volunteer Information
Volunteers should meet at Nature’s Inn at Minnesota Horse & Hunt Club between 7:00 – 7:15 AM each morning.

New members and first-time volunteers are especially encouraged to attend! If you’re interested in learning how hunt tests run, we can pair you with experienced members to help teach different roles such as:
• Marshal
• Steward
• Gunner
• Bird Thrower
• Line Handler
• Test Setup & More

You’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to run a successful event while also learning valuable training and testing knowledge.

Come out for a few hours or stay all day — we’d love to have you join us!

What a gorgeous day for a training day field trip at Rookie Retriever Grounds.
We had a great turn out, being able to have two groups, started with a yard drill and end with a little water work for those dogs who have had some early season water work started.
Many thanks to Pete and Blane for setting this up, Blane and Lance for hauling equipment and their wheelers, and for Nate, Lance, Lowell and Cathy for setups and mentorship throughout the day.
I hope all enjoyed the day!
