The Cold Springs Historical Society is a tax-exempt organization founded in 1965 to preserve the historic Cold Springs schoolhouse and Pioneer cemetery. The hand hewn log schoolhouse was constructed in 1887 by local residents for the benefit of their children. The last year of classes was 1948-1949 it was then abandoned in 1949. The schoolhouse is one of the oldest log schoolhouse in the State of

South Dakota. In March of 1973, the building was placed on the National Registry of Historic Places. Cold Springs Historical Society was formed to maintain the schoolhouse as a historic structure, educating the public on the history of the schoolhouse and homesteaders of the time. The ongoing preservation of the schoolhouse and cemetery is financed by memberships, donations, memorial gifts and bequests. The pioneer cemetery contains graves of residents of Custer and Fall River counties. Among the burials are veterans of many of the nation's conflicts. Civil War, Spanish-American War, World War I and II, Korean War as well as peacetime service are represented.
