The Ochoco National Forest & Crooked River National Grassland is moving into Stage 1 Public Use Fire Restrictions on Monday, May 18, due to recent weather patterns, including above-average temperatures, low relative humidity and predicted winds.

🔥Stage 1 Public Use Fire Restrictions prohibit open fires, including wood stoves and charcoal briquette fires, on Central Oregon public lands, except within designated, developed campgrounds. Find a list here: https://www.fs.usda.gov/.../public-use-fire-restrictions

🪵Chainsaw use is prohibited between the hours of 1:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., with usage allowed outside of this timeframe. Saw operators must possess a long-handled round point shovel with an 8-inch blade (size 0) and a fire extinguisher with a minimum rating of ABC 8 oz. Additionally, a one-hour fire watch is required after ceasing saw operations.

⚙️Generators are permitted when fully contained in the bed of a truck or securely attached to a vehicle, provided that they are lifted off the ground or placed in an area cleared of all flammable materials within a 10-foot diameter and equipped with an approved spark arrestor.

Friday morning, a group of 5 SAR team members went to COCC to preform a demonstration for three groups of school kids from a LaPine School. The team decided to demonstrate what SAR’s function is during a fire evacuation. What the level of evacuations are, what to do in an evacuation and how we flag the homes after the owners are notified, During the demonstration, all of the students were given the chance to use the fire shelters we use just incase there is a need to use them in the field. All the students were having a good time using the training shelters. Several even did the training a couple of times.

Thursday evening at 8:20 pm SAR teams were activated for a search for a lost mushroom picker who had run across a bear and her cub near the Wildcat Mountain area. As the SAR teams were in the process of gathering information and equipment for the search and just about to proceed out of the station for the search, a Sheriff Deputy located the lost subject at which time the SAR teams were ordered to stand down and the search was called off.

Crook County Sheriff’s Office Citizen’s Academy – Session #11

Congratulations to the 13 graduates of the Crook County Sheriff’s Office Citizen’s Academy Session #11!

During the academy, participants learned directly from deputies and community partners about many areas of public safety, including patrol, corrections, firearm safety, emergency preparedness, and CERT.

Since the program began, nearly 200 community members have completed the academy. Graduates have gone on to support the Sheriff’s Office in meaningful ways, including serving on courthouse and jail committees and helping raise funds for the K9 program.

We are proud of this year’s graduates and are already looking forward to next year’s academy. Community members interested in applying may stop by the Sheriff’s Office to complete an application.
