People & Stories / Gente y Cuentos

People & Stories / Gente y Cuentos Did you know that more than 30 million adults in the U.S.—that’s nearly 1 in 10!—aren't reading above a third-grade level.

Bringing literature & poetry to underserved communities - light to darkness - for over 50 years.
https://linktr.ee/peopleandstories.genteycuentos The power of a literary work begins only when an appreciative reader encounters it. Unfortunately, access to literature is linked to rigid social hierarchies, often drawn on the basis of class, race, and educational privilege.

People & Stories / Gente y Cuentos has been working to even the playing field for over 45 years. Using oral reading and a unique, humanities-based discussion framework, our program method makes literature accessible for those with limited opportunity, desire, or ability to read independently. Our mission echoes what the late Cliff Becker, NEA Program Director, valued in public literature programs – “Literature is the most portable of art forms,” he wrote, “Yet the barriers to its enjoyment extend from a lack of delivery systems to the troubling fact that too many lack the capacity to read the novels, poems, and stories that reflect who we are.” The People & Stories / Gente y Cuentos program has been providing that delivery system since 1972. We reach adults and young adults in diverse social service agencies—including residential treatment facilities, prisons, homeless shelters, adult education programs, libraries, senior centers, and alternative schools—on local, regional, and national levels. We are only able to do this work with the support of our community. We rely on grants from foundations and government agencies, as well as contributions from individuals, to support our partnerships with community organizations. Thank you to all those who make our programs possible. You’ve helped us open doors for low-income adults who weren’t read to growing up, many of whom have since told us they are now reading to their own children. You’ve helped us open doors for at-risk youth who didn’t consider themselves to be “readers”, many of whom are now regular library patrons and are collecting the stories we provide to build libraries of their own. You’ve helped us open doors to new immigrants who long to feel safe in a new country, many of whom continue to meet regularly with their new friends well after the programs end. You’ve helped us open doors for seniors who struggle to read the pages in their favorite books, and are once again enjoying classic stories and building new friendships. With your help and the support of our community, we will continue to connect lives to literature—one short story at a time. To learn more, please visit www.peopleandstories.org

Has a book, short story, poem, or essay ever changed the way you thought about something?

Not necessarily your favorite - but one that opened your eyes to a different perspective or helped you better understand someone else's experience.

It's a question we think about often at People & Stories/Gente y Cuentos because that's one of the gifts literature offers us: the opportunity to step into someone else's shoes, if only for a little while.

This summer, we're inviting you to experience People & Stories through free "Try It!" sessions at Morven Museum & Garden and Summit Free Public Library.

And we're thrilled that our work will soon be featured on the Emmy Award-winning PBS series State of the Arts, filmed this spring at several of our New Jersey program sites.

One year ago, our Executive Director, Debra Lampert-Rudman, opened an email informing her that funding representing 60% of People & Stories/Gente y Cuentos’ annual budget had been eliminated.

In a small nonprofit, moments like that can feel overwhelming.

Today, Debra reflects on what followed: the uncertainty, the difficult decisions, the generosity of supporters, and the determination of a community that refused to let this work disappear.

Because of donors, volunteers, board members, coordinators, partners, and friends, People & Stories/Gente y Cuentos continues bringing literature, conversation, and human connection to individuals and communities with limited access to cultural and educational opportunities.

We invite you to read her reflection:

And to everyone who has stood with us over the past year: thank you. Your support has helped keep stories alive and accessible to those who need them most.

One of the liveliest voices in today's session at Greenwood House Senior Healthcare Abrams Residence came from a first-time participant - 98 years young - bringing energy, insight, and joy to the circle.

People & Stories / Gente y Cuentos Coordinator Ellie Fisher led a rich session featuring author Richard Bank, who began with a reading from his newest work, followed by a lively discussion and writing prompt. Each week, participants write in response to literary short stories and poems - building toward an anthology of their own words and reflections by the end of this 8-week program.

This much loved program is gratefully funded in part by New Jersey State Council on the Arts Creative Aging grant
