GOCCNJ is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and the only network of organizations in NJ working together to make certain that patients with serious illness get the care they need and no less, and the care they want and no more. The Goals of Care Coalition of New Jersey (GOCCNJ) was founded in 2018 to better communicate, coordinate and collaborate on issues and activities to improve care for peopl

e in our state living with serious illness. We aim to increase access to high-quality, person-centered palliative and end-of-life care by convening stakeholders, identifying unmet needs, advocating for equitable policies and improved health outcomes, and sharing best practices and resources. GOCCNJ is comprised of nearly 35 statewide organizations representing the interests of older adults and people with serious illness, and the diverse group of providers that care for them including the academic institutions in NJ training the next generation of healthcare professionals. Through advocacy, research, and education, our mission is to provide policy makers, healthcare providers, patients, and family caregivers with the information, resources, training, and tools they need to access comprehensive, high-quality, person-centered advance care planning, palliative and end-of-life care. Our member organizations include: Churches Improving Communities (CIC), College of Pastoral Supervision and Psychotherapy (CPSP), Corporation for Supportive Housing (CSH), Health Care Association of New Jersey (HCANJ), Home Care & Hospice Association of NJ, International End of Life Doula Association (INELDA), Jewish Sacred Aging, Leading Age New Jersey and Delaware, Medical Society of New Jersey (MSNJ), National Association of Social Workers New Jersey Chapter, New Jersey Advocates for Aging Well (NJAAW, formerly NJ Foundation for Aging), New Jersey American College of Emergency Physicians, New Jersey Association of Health Plans (AHP), New Jersey Association of Mental Health and Addiction Agencies (NJAMHAA), New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute (NJHCQI), New Jersey Hospital Association (NJHA), New Jersey Long-Term Care Leaders Coalition, New Jersey Long-Term Care Ombudsman, New Jersey Palliative Care APN Consortium, New Jersey State Society of Physician Assistant (NJSSPA), Samaritan Healthcare & Hospice, and the VNA Health Group. The right support can make a meaningful difference during cancer treatment. Thank you, Support Is Care, for highlighting the importance of nutrition in cancer care.

Treatment can change the way food tastes, how people feel, and even whether eating feels possible at all. Supportive Cancer Care offers whole-person nutrition support to help manage side effects, maintain strength, and find foods that work during treatment and beyond.

Congratulations to New Jersey Advocates for Aging Well and the Lifelong Strong NJ initiative on the introduction of Assembly Bill A-5140, sponsored by Assemblywoman Carol Murphy, Majority Whip and co-sponsored by Assemblywoman Verlina Reynolds-Jackson. The bill would establish a Task Force to develop a Multi-Sector Plan for Aging in New Jersey, helping strengthen support for older adults, caregivers, and communities. A coordinated statewide strategy can improve access to healthcare, caregiver support, and palliative care services. GOCCNJ looks forward to following the bill's progress and sharing opportunities to support this effort as it moves through the Legislature supporting this effort. Meaningful conversations today can help shape care that reflects what matters most tomorrow. The Advance Care Planning (ACP) Certificate Program, developed in partnership with Compassion & Choices, helps healthcare professionals build the skills and confidence to lead thoughtful, compassionate conversations about care preferences with patients and families. This online learning program focuses on patient-centered communication, cultural responsiveness, and supporting individuals in making informed decisions about their care. By fostering these conversations early, healthcare professionals can help ensure that future care aligns with each person's values, goals, and preferences.

It’s okay to ask questions. It’s okay to ask for more help. Cancer care that supports the whole person—not just the cancer they’re being treated for—is never too much to ask for.

A recent article highlights research suggesting that advance directives may help reduce intensive end-of-life care and promote care that is more aligned with a person’s preferences and values. The study found that older adults who had advance directives documented early in their electronic health records were 25% less likely to receive burdensome care near the end of life and 31% less likely to die in the hospital. ’s Advance Care Planning resources help individuals and families start these important conversations, explore care options, and communicate their wishes known before difficult decisions arise.
