The Tsunami Project

The Tsunami Project We are rebuilding Tsunami, the fastest purpose-built racing aircraft in the world. The project has three main objectives.

1.

In an attempt to inspire, engage and educate the next generation of aviators and technology leaders, The Tsunami Project takes on a bold challenge to reconstruct the fastest purpose-built racing aircraft ever built, and attempt to make her go even faster. Inspire the next generation to get involved in STEM+A (science, technology, engineering, mathematics and aviation)

2. Rebuild Tsunami and share

her story with the world.

3. Set the absolute 3-km world speed record for propeller-driven piston-powered aircraft. (current record 528 mph)

Our mission is to create an exciting hands-on educational project, focused around rebuilding Tsunami, advanced engineering and speed record attempts. Our vision is to reinvigorate sport aviation and to inspire people just like yourself to follow your dreams. Tsunamis real story is not about how fast she flew or how advanced her design was, it is about the amazing people who dared to dream, the individuals who took an idea and made it into a reality, those few who worked day in and day out designing, building and rebuilding this remarkable aircraft. Few people are determined enough to see a project of this magnitude through and even fewer have the motivation to pick themselves up after being repeatedly knocked down. This story is about overcoming incredible odds, making audacious goals and never giving up. With this project we hope to honor the individuals that designed and built Tsunami, and to share their incredible story with the rest of the world.

“John Sandberg lived a life he loved and never gave up on his goals. He was, in poetic terms, what Longfellow called “a hero in the strife.” – Jack Cox Sportsman Pilot, Fall 1991

We headed to Aircorps Aviation this weekend to use the Farnham roller.

Our goal was to get the top skins formed for the fuselage and if we had time left over we would form the empennage and turtle deck. However, the machine couldn’t handle the .063 skins at 9 and a half feet long, but it was able to form everything else.

Thank you so much Erik Hokuf and Dan Matachek for all your help.

When we left Aircorps on Friday, I called Pat Harker and told him that the Farnham didn’t work and he suggested we use the press brake dies he built for the leading edges on his P-82, so then on Saturday we went over to C&P Aviation and after a couple failed attempts I think we nailed it!

Overall it was a great weekend and we can’t wait to start fitting up the skins.

We finished riveting the fuselage this afternoon and we were able to pull it out of the jig for good.

Next we will build a fixture for the tail and start assembly of the empennage.
