Happy National Library Week!

Some ne'er-do-wells want to attack our libraries and our intellectual freedoms (along with everything and everyone else).

But it couldn’t be us, because we looooooove ‘em!

National Library Week, orchestrated by is a celebration of all that we love about our libraries. The event runs now through April 12th, and is punctuated by several celebratory days, including today - Right To Read Day!

Right to Read Day highlights the freedom to read, the freedom to access information, the freedom to find community and serves to combat censorship attempts and attacks on our intellectual freedoms. The American Library Association and ask us all to match their resistance against these attacks and show up for our libraries and library workers. Together we can make book challenges and bans a footnote in history.

Today may be called Right to Read Day, but every day is a great day to show up for your libraries, your library workers, and your intellectual rights. Show your support by:
- Checking out a banned book
- Sending a "Drawn to Freedom" postcard to your library
- Becoming civilly engaged: Register to vote!
- Calling & emailing your Congressional representatives
- Reporting censorship attempts to Unite Against Book Bans
- Getting involved with your local school or library Board
- Advocating for the right to read on social media with the hashtags and

The Three Librarian-approved suggested reading for today is...

'It Can't Happen Here' by Sinclair Lewis

---

From the description on the back of the 2014 Penguin Signet Edition:

"'It Can't Happen Here' is the only one of Sinclair Lewis's later novels to match the power of 'Main Street', 'Babbitt', and 'Arrowsmith'. A cautionary tale about the fragility of democracy, it is an alarming, eerily timeless look at how fascism could take hold in America. Written during the Great Depression, when the country was largely oblivious to Hitler's aggression, it juxtaposes sharp political satire with the chillingly realistic rise of a president who becomes a dictator to save the nation from welfare cheats, s*x, crime, and a liberal press. Called "a message to thinking Americans" by the Springfield Republican when it was published in 1935, 'It Can't Happen Here' is a shockingly prescient novel that remains as fresh and contemporary as today's news.

This is your Book Defender, reporting to you live from the library staff bathroom to tell you to vote if you have not already done so!

Voting is a right for all eligible US citizens that, unfortunately, seems to have become a privilege for some. Getting to the polls and voting unencumbered is not a given for all citizens, so make sure you show up and show out to have your voice heard and to represent those who don't experience the same ease of access.

A lot is at stake on the ballot this year, including your intellectual freedoms! Make sure you vote for the candidate who best reflects and represents your values on your ability to make decisions about your body, your livelihood, your education, and yes, your right to read!
