New Jersey has been building America – and saving lives – for 250 years. On Wednesday, HINJ CEO Chrissy Buteas was proud to be part of that conversation at the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce’s NJ250 event and panel, “How New Jersey Built America – and How We Build the Next 250 Years.”

New Jersey has been powering progress for 250 years, and we’re proud of the role our healthcare community plays in that story. NJHA’s Cathy Bennett was part of a stellar lineup of panelists for last evening’s NJ 250: NJ Powers America event presented by the N.J. Chamber of Commerce. The program celebrated the leaders and innovators who have moved our state and our nation forward – while always looking ahead to what comes next.

As Cathy shared, healthcare is part of what makes New Jersey a place where people can build a life: find a job, start a family and know that there’s always a place to turn when they need care.

NJHA and its members are proud to be part of New Jersey’s history of innovation. Our powerhouse sectors, including healthcare, education and life sciences, have always worked together to turn discovery into progress – creating new breakthroughs, better outcomes and healthier communities for generations to come.

DYK the historic hospital at Ellis Island is actually in New Jersey –– part of our state’s long and proud tradition of healthcare leadership, innovation and quality. Yesterday, the NJHA team had the opportunity to take a hard-hat tour of the hospital facilities, a fascinating look back at the complex built in 1900. It played a key role in welcoming millions of immigrants through Ellis Island, treating illness and helping newcomers begin their lives in the United States.

In its time, the Ellis Island hospital was state-of-the-art. It pioneered infection prevention and control strategies, became a center for studying emerging illnesses and was the birthplace of modern occupational therapy.

Today the facilities are in various stages of restoration – some areas brought back to their early 20th century glory and some remaining in a state of “arrested decay,” which helps prioritize resources. The contrast makes the restoration work all the more remarkable.

More than a century later, the Ellis Island hospital is an enduring reminder that healthcare innovation has deep roots in New Jersey, reflecting a tradition of quality and caring that continues across our state today.

Great nurses come from all backgrounds, and nursing needs more men. 🩺 At a time when the demand for nurses continues to grow, encouraging more men to enter the profession can help build a stronger, more diverse workforce.

Good food can do more than fuel your body. It can support your mood and help you manage stress, too. 🫐🥬🍫

As part of our initiative, NJHA staff took a break to explore the connection between nutrition and brain health, including how certain foods can support serotonin, the body’s “feel-good” chemical.

Some “foods for thought” to add to your plate: spinach, blueberries, salmon, chickpeas, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, sauerkraut, quinoa, olive oil and, yes, dark chocolate!

Thank you to registered dietitian Dr. Anju Dang of Princeton Nutrition for sharing her expertise and giving us plenty to chew on.

Mosquito-borne illnesses such as West Nile virus, dengue and Zika are a growing concern, creating new urgency around prevention and treatment. Now, Hackensack Meridian Health is taking a leading role in the search for innovative therapies that could help combat these emerging threats. Read more from ROI-NJ :

As we wrap up September’s observance of , here’s one final – but very important – part of being prepared: Plan for those with special needs. If your household includes people with disabilities, older adults or others with special needs, assess how their medical, physical or cognitive needs will be addressed in a disaster or emergency. Things to think about:

☑️ Mobility issues in the event of an evacuation
☑️ Medical devices that require electricity or batteries
☑️ A sufficient supply of medications to last through an emergency
☑️ Assistive tools to support communication
☑️ Any further supplies – food, collar, leash, ID tags, plastic bags – needed for service animals that support your loved one.

New Jersey provides a special service called Register Ready, a confidential and secure database designed to help emergency managers and first responders help people who have disabilities or functional needs in the event of a disaster. As Becker's Hospital Review notes, Magnet is the American Nurses Association Credentialing Center’s highest recognition for nursing excellence. Earning it seven consecutive times represents decades of sustained commitment to exceptional nursing care. And it’s not just these seven-time winners. New Jersey has the highest percentage of repeat Magnet winners than any state in the U.S.

Now that’s something to put on the map.
