Congress created the 340B program in 1992 to protect the health of vulnerable communities and at-risk populations through discounted medications. Now, the vital program is under attack by drug manufacturers. In a new op-ed, NJHA President and CEO Cathy Bennett delivers a resounding defense of this vital program and the deep impact it has on New Jersey communities.

“New Jersey's safety-net hospitals are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They do not turn patients away based on insurance status or ability to pay. They absorb losses that would bankrupt private businesses. They provide services that no other entity in their communities offers. They do this, in part, because 340B makes it financially possible. Protecting 340B is not a favor to hospitals. It is an obligation to patients.”

The power of partnership was on full display yesterday at NJHA, as every N.J. birthing hospital gathered as part of the N.J. Perinatal Quality Collaborative conference, AIMing for Impact. The NJPQC convenes hospitals, community partners and other healthcare organizations to improve maternal health outcomes through collaboration, evidence-based practice and shared learning. Clinicians engaged in discussions on culture change and best practice, led by featured faculty Daniel DiSabatino, DO, and Sarah Lavonne, RN, BSN, RNC-OB, founder and CEO of Bundle Birth. It was an inspiring day giving participants renewed purpose, strengthened partnerships and momentum for the work ahead.

The Hospitals Against Violence initiative started a decade ago today, and our commitment to preventing workplace violence has never been stronger. N.J. hospital investments in staff safety include increased security presence, protective barriers at workstations, de-escalation training and support, panic alarms for staff and redesigning staff ID badges so that only their first name and second initial are displayed. But the challenges of workplace violence also require societal solutions – on issues ranging from civility and respect; to gun violence; to investment in access to care, especially in mental health and substance use services so that patients are receiving care in the appropriate location. Everyone has an important role in supporting our healthcare heroes.

Sunday, June 7, is National Cancer Survivors Day – a celebration of life for the 18 million cancer survivors across the nation. And that number is growing across New Jersey, thanks to an 18.8% decline in cancer mortality between 2016 and 2024. Read more about what it means for improved care – and lives saved – in NJHA’s report from the Center for Health Analytics, Research and Transformation (CHART). https://www.njha.com/CHART

The countdown to the World Cup is on! On June 13 – just 9 days away – New Jersey will host its first match featuring Brazil and Morocco. Yesterday, NJHA and healthcare stakeholders across the state wrapped up the Healthcare Readiness Series in-person conferences in preparation for the World Cup and other mass events in the region this summer. Our experts addressed topics including infectious disease readiness, decontamination planning and communication priorities when hosting a multinational event. Many thanks to RWJBarnabas Health’s Dr. Marie DiDario and Dr. Alexis LaPietra, NJHA COO Ray Brandes and all of our presenters for sharing their expertise.
