Fall is the best time to be vaccinated to protect yourself and your loved ones.

Key info:

โžก๏ธ Vaccination is especially important for adults ages 65 years and older, as well as children and adults of all ages who have an underlying health condition that puts them at greater risk of respiratory illness.
โžก๏ธ COVID-19 was associated with an estimated 290,000โ€“450,000 hospitalizations and 34,000โ€“53,000 deaths in the U.S. last year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
โžก๏ธ The COVID vaccine has been proven effective in protecting against the most serious impacts of the disease, including hospitalization and critical medical interventions such as ventilation.

Being prepared starts before an emergency occurs. Each September, delivers a strong reminder on the importance of personal preparedness to protect your loved ones, your home and your own health and wellness. This month, set aside 15 minutes weekly to plan and prepare. If disaster strikes, youโ€™ll already be several steps ahead.

โ˜‘๏ธIdentify evacuation routes within your home.
โ˜‘๏ธEstablish a family meeting point outside the home.
โ˜‘๏ธDetail a communication plan to keep household members connected across different locations.
โ˜‘๏ธEnsure access to important items like medications and essential paperwork.
โ˜‘๏ธMake added plans for family members with special needs, as well as pets.

For families facing food insecurity, the summer months bring added challenges without the stability of school lunch programs. Enter Hackensack Meridian Health and the Fulfill food bank. Together, the two organizations provided nearly 2,000 food backpacks with nonperishable healthy foods to children in Ocean and Monmouth counties this summer. โ€œThis initiative is about more than just providing food; itโ€™s about providing security, improving health outcomes, and showing our communities that we are here for them,โ€ said Nicole Harris-Hollingsworth, senior vice president of social impact & population health. ๐ŸงธA healthy start begins before baby arrives.

Did you know that recommended vaccines during pregnancy can help protect both you and your baby from serious illnesses? Talk with your prenatal care provider about vaccines that may be recommended during pregnancy, including Tdap, flu and RSV.

After birth, newborns should receive recommended immunizations, including the Hepatitis B vaccine, to help protect against serious infections from day one.

As we close out Augustโ€™s observance of National Immunization Awareness Month, remember that vaccination can help give your little one the healthiest possible start. ๐Ÿฉท๐Ÿ’™

DYK? Breastfeeding provides important health benefits for both babies and mothers. Breastfed babies have a lower risk of asthma, obesity, type 1 diabetes and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). For mothers, breastfeeding can reduce the risk of breast and ovarian cancer, type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. Every family's feeding journey is unique, and breastfeeding is recommended when possible because of these health benefits. A message from the N.J. Perinatal Quality Collaborative.
