NEADS Service Dogs in Training Logan and Morris visited St. Bernard's High School in Fitchburg for a training trip. The students enjoyed a break from the books, and our pups got incredible real-world exposure to help them on their journey to becoming full Service Dogs. Thank you, St. Bernard's.

Mansfield Police Officer Ken Wright and Therapy Dog Bentley Earn National School Safety Honor

MANSFIELD — Mansfield Police Detective Ken Wright and his trained therapy dog, Bentley, have been named recipients of the 2026 Safety Support Companion Award by the National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO).

The national recognition honors an SRO and animal companion who make a meaningful difference in the school community they serve.

Wright, a Mansfield Police officer for 26 years, had served as an SRO for the past 11 years. He and Bentley, a yellow Labrador retriever, have been partners for seven of those years, becoming a familiar and trusted presence across Mansfield Public Schools.

The NASRO award recognizes an SRO and companion who, through their roles as public safety educator, mentor/informal counselor and law enforcement officer, "make a significant positive and impactful contribution to schools" through their daily work supporting students and staff.

For Wright and Bentley, that description is a daily reality.

"This award is a tremendous honor for Detective Wright and Bentley, and it speaks to the meaningful relationships they have built within our schools and community over many years," said Chief Ronald Sellon. "Bentley has become much more than just a comfort dog. Together, he and Ken provide support and connection for students and staff every single day."

"Detective Wright's commitment to supporting our students along with Bentley's calm, friendly presence has helped students through stressful situations, provided comfort during difficult moments and strengthened positive relationships between students and law enforcement," said Mansfield Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Michelle McKeon. "We are extremely grateful for Detective Wright, Bentley and our partnership with the Mansfield Police Department."

Wright and Bentley will formally receive the award during NASRO's opening ceremonies at the 2026 National School Safety Conference in Reno, Nevada, on June 29.
