Hey everyone!

I first started this page way back in 2011 after working at the childcare I went to as a kid. If you didn’t know, Karen Summers started this program way back in 1994 at the Hillside Methodist Church at 225 W Emerson St. The program began with maybe 20-25 kids - from kindergarten up through 5th grade. Karen kept us busy with activities, arts and crafts, games, theme days, cookouts, field trips and so much more. From painting to hide and seek to field trips- the movie theatre, the pool, Lafeyette park, Lowell playground, Weather Rock Campground, etc. The program left such an impression on me that I grew up and worked there for a decade between school years.

I made this page to keep parents updated with reminders and document all the fun stuff we did. It’s filled with memories and as such, I will not be deleting the page, but will see about archiving it.

From all of the summer explosion staff over many years we served the community, we say thank you. Thanks for allowing us the privilege of taking care of your whippersnappers.

Lot's of questions about tonight! There was an email sent last week with sign ups for the meeting tonight. If you did not receive an email please check your YMCA account and confirm that you have entered the correct email address. There are still spots left, feel free to register if you would like to attend. If you had a child attended Summer Explosion last summer and you are wanting to register for Summer 2023 please check your email for details on how to enroll your child. I wanted to let our families know what is going on with registration this year.
There is going to be changes this year

It has been an honor and privilege to be able to work with this amazing and wonderful program “Summer Explosion” I am so proud of this program that has served so many families for over 20 years. I have spent 22 years with some amazing staff and children.

It has been a difficult decision to make, but I have decided not to return as director. I believe it is time for me to step down, spend more time with my grandchildren,take that extra vacation with my husband and re-evaluate what is next for me.

I want to thank all the families for all your support.

I did let the mayor know of my decision in December.
The mayor and I have talked with the YMCA
We are waiting on their decision.

There has been many questions about registration. I felt that all of you needed to know where we are in this process.
