For nearly 40 years, Isaiah House has been a lifeline for New Jersey residents experiencing homelessness — providing shelter, housing support, and food assistance to hundreds of individuals and families each year.

As homelessness and food insecurity continue to rise, providers like Isaiah House are being asked to do more with fewer resources.

Join NJCEH in calling for strategic investment in New Jersey’s homeless response system so organizations like Isaiah House can continue helping people move from crisis to stability:

This year’s AmeriCorps cohort came together in Princeton for a two-day retreat focused on connection, growth, and community. 💙

Volunteers built stronger relationships across the cohort, sharpened skills to support their service work across the homeless response system, and attended the Governor’s Volunteerism Conference, where they connected with inspiring community leaders, including .

We’re proud to invest in opportunities that support our volunteers, strengthen their impact, and build a stronger community together!

When housing, behavioral health, and healthcare systems operate separately, people fall through the cracks.

We’re proud to spotlight the Rescue Mission of Trenton, whose work reflects a different approach that brings housing, health, recovery, outreach, and basic needs support together in one coordinated continuum.

For over 100 years, the Rescue Mission has served individuals experiencing homelessness, hunger, and behavioral health needs with dignity and care.

Through S.H.I.E.L.D. NJ, we are calling for at least $100 million in state investment in New Jersey’s homeless response system.

Today is the voter registration deadline in New Jersey — the final opportunity to register or update your voter registration information to cast your ballot in the June 2 primary election.

Homeless does not mean voteless! This election is especially important, as the June 2 primary will determine each party’s candidates for the November midterm elections.

For the growing population of people living unsheltered, the path to housing is rarely straightforward.

Many individuals experiencing unsheltered homelessness face the highest barriers to care, and too often, are criminalized instead of supported.

That’s why outreach matters.

We’re proud to spotlight Just Believe Inc., whose team is on the ground every day providing food, transportation, case management, and connection to services-- but the need is growing in both Ocean County and beyond.

Through S.H.I.E.L.D. NJ, we are calling for at least $100 million in state investment in the homeless response system.

The NJ Coalition to End Homelessness was proud to see Garden State Leader alum Melissa Lapinski featured on yesterday’s panel discussion on affordability and the challenges facing New Jersey’s budget at ’s Budgets & Brews event.

The conversation was an important reminder that, over the last 30 years, cuts and changes to cash assistance and other safety net programs have made it increasingly difficult for low-income families across New Jersey to stay financially stable and securely housed. For too many households, one emergency, missed paycheck, or unexpected expense can quickly snowball into a housing crisis.

Thank you, Melissa, for helping shine a light on the real system gaps impacting New Jersey families — and thank you to NJPP for convening such an honest and necessary conversation about the policy choices shaping our state.

We’ll also be recruiting for the 2026–2027 Garden State Leaders cohort soon, so keep your eyes peeled for updates.

Anchored by a mission to shelter, feed, educate, and promote the healing and independence of women and children, York Street Project has spent more than three decades walking alongside families as they rebuild their lives.

Their work goes far beyond a place to stay. It’s early childhood education, workforce development, and the kind of wraparound support that helps families move from crisis to long-term stability.

But the reality is this: more families are arriving than the system is built to serve.

Across New Jersey, more families are experiencing homelessness for the first time. Shelters are full. Waitlists are growing. Providers like York Street Project are doing everything they can in a system that does not have the resources it needs.

S.H.I.E.L.D. NJ calls for a $100 million investment as a critical first step to stabilize and strengthen that system while we push for the sustained funding required to meet the true scale of need.

Because families cannot wait.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, the NJ Coalition to End Homelessness is naming something we see every day.

Mental health is health. Housing is health care.

Homelessness is profoundly disruptive and disorienting. It makes it harder to manage mental health in very real ways—adhering to medication, keeping appointments, and staying grounded day to day. And when mental health needs go unmet, it becomes even harder to find and hold onto housing.

This is not accidental. It is the result of policy choices, system gaps, and chronic underinvestment.

We cannot talk about mental health without talking about housing.

At NJCEH, we are advocating for and advancing solutions that meet people where they are, including low-barrier access to care and integrated services across the homeless response system.

Because if we’re serious about mental health, we have to be just as serious about housing.

🚨 Take Action by Tonight! Tell HUD to Reject Time Limits and Work Requirements on Rental Assistance that Keeps People Housed.

HUD proposed a rule that would allow public housing agencies (PHAs) and HUD-assisted property owners the option to impose work requirements and time limits on federal rental assistance.

If a 2-year time limit were imposed across HUD rental assistance programs, an estimated 3.3 million people—including 1.7 million children—could lose their rental assistance.

Tonight is the deadline to submit comments to HUD. Rental assistance is targeted support that helps families remain stable and avoid homelessness. Keeping people housed strengthens communities, is more cost-effective than responding to homelessness after the fact, and is simply the right thing to do: https://nlihc.org/resource/proposed-hud-rules-would-jeopardize-housing-assistance-comment-periods-ending-soon-take
