Some sad news for Princeton, KY's Boy Scout Troop 87 Alumni. One of the troop's former registered adult leaders passed away on Monday, May 8, 2023. Sherry Prowell was the Troop Committee Secretary for Troop 87 during her entire time as a registered adult leader for the troop (for almost 16 full years--from March 19, 1996 through January 31, 2012) and a very valued member of the troop committee during that entire time. She initially registered as an adult leader for the troop around 6 months after her son joined the troop as a Scout. Her son would eventually earn the Eagle Scout rank in 2000 (becoming the troop's 13th Eagle Scout in the troop history then). Below is her obituary.

Thank you for the warm welcome to Facebook. Please like, share, and invite fellow Scouters and friends to the Official Scouts BSA page. We have a new feature called “Ask the Scouts BSA Committee.” Have a question? Need clarification? Send us a direct message and we’ll see if we can get it answered on the Page. Please keep in mind we cannot answer every single question, your unit leadership, unit commissioner, district executive, or council leadership should be your first call!

Question: Can Troops require Scouts to complete worksheets before awarding a merit badge?

Answer: No, they cannot require worksheets. According the Guide to Advancement (7.0.4.8 Unofficial Worksheets and Learning Aids) “Worksheets and other materials that may be of assistance in earning merit badges are available from a variety of places including unofficial sources on the internet and even troop libraries. Use of these aids is permissible as long as the materials can be correlated with the current requirements that Scouts must fulfill. Completing “worksheets” may suffice where a requirement calls for something in writing, but this would not work for a requirement where the Scout must discuss, tell, show, or demonstrate, etc. Note that Scouts shall not be required to use these learning aids in order to complete a merit badge.”
