Sozosei Foundation

Sozosei Foundation Committed to the health and wellness of individuals and communities. The Sozosei Foundation was established in 2019 as a philanthropic arm of Otsuka.

Our mission is to be a catalyst for ideas that nurture creative solutions for healthier communities. The name Sozosei means “creativity” in Japanese. Our Japanese heritage is manifest in our fundamental values and day-to-day operations. The Foundation’s primary focus is to eliminate the use of jails and prisons for the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness by improving access to mental health

care in communities across the nation. In addition to our focus on the decriminalization of mental illness, the Sozosei Foundation also supports efforts to build resilient, healthy, and vibrant communities in Stockton, California; City of Baltimore, Maryland; and Camden, Newark, Patterson, and Trenton, New Jersey, and engages in disaster relief and recovery in places where Otsuka has a presence globally.

A new study shows how virtual reality can better prepare police officers to de-escalate mental health crises. Officers engaged in simulations with characters portraying symptoms of schizophrenic psychosis. More than half reported learning new techniques, and many reported enhanced empathy. An empathetic approach values proactive care over reactive punishment and is a key to decriminalizing mental illness. https://thedebrief.org/virtual-reality-could-revolutionize-police-training-for-encounters-that-lead-to-mental-health-crises-heres-how/
