As we move into election season, Calvert Education Association (CEA) wants to refresh our members on the endorsement process that led to our support of three candidates running for the Board of Education in Districts 1, 2, and 3.

Our endorsement process is governed by a joint committee between two unions – CAESS (Calvert Association of Educational Support Staff) and CEA. The committee is primarily comprised of rank and file members from both unions. CEA works hard to ensure that the committee reflects the diversity of our union. No one who asked to participate on this committee was turned away.

The joint committee members are the primary decision makers throughout the endorsement process. It is the work of the committee to write and edit the questionnaires sent to candidates. These questionnaires reflect analysis of both contemporary and recurring issues; the answers submitted are further explored through candidate interviews.

The candidate interviews are conducted by committee members who then deliberate over who to endorse and ultimately vote on who we support, while the elected leadership of both unions help facilitate the process of ensuring the endorsements are reached in a fair and equitable way. The voted-upon recommendations of the committee are presented to each governing body for approval. The CEA Representative Assembly overwhelmingly voted to support the committee’s recommendations at our September representative assembly meeting.

We are committed to preserving the integrity of our process and protecting it against those who attempt to interfere by seeking favor or lobbying our decision makers to benefit their favored candidate(s). We do not publicly disclose the members of our joint committee prior to the interviews, especially to those who have not sought our endorsement. Any candidate who participates in the process has the right to decline an endorsement or withdraw from the process should they so choose.

Our primary goal is to elect members to the Board of Education who are the strongest advocates for public education and who will stand up for our members, our students and our community.
As always, we welcome volunteers from CAESS and CEA who want to be involved in the hands-on decision-making process. It's a great way to learn more about our decision-making process.

CBW's BOE Candidates' Forum.

You're Invited.

The Concerned Black Women (CBW) of Calvert County is having a forum for Board of Education Candidates. Three candidates declined our offer three times after being given three different dates to attend.

CBW is a nonpartisan, nonpolitical organization whose mission is to: service the Calvert County community, establish scholarships, create health awareness, provide economic empowerment, promote public leadership development, and encourage the community to participate in the governmental decision making process for African American women and their families in Calvert County.

We invite the entire community to attend this forum to understand who wants to represent Calvert County in support of the African American family unit and education.

Please see flyer for details.
