🚨 PUBLIC NOTICE: PLEASE DO NOT PICK UP STRAY ANIMALS 🚨
We understand that many people want to help when they see a dog or cat roaming in the community. However, we strongly encourage the public not to pick up stray animals unless there is an immediate safety concern.
When an animal is removed from the area where it was originally found, it creates several challenges:
🐾 We do not know the animal’s temperament or behavior history.
🐾 We do not know the animal’s medical condition.
🐾 Animal Resources loses the ability to verify exactly where the animal was found.
🐾 Many lost pets are trying to return home and may be located by their owners if left in the area where they were found.
Our office receives calls daily from individuals who are not City of Prichard residents stating they have picked up a dog they believe was found in our jurisdiction. Unfortunately, Animal Resources responds to calls based on priority, not on a first-call basis. Our officers may be handling emergencies, animal bites, aggressive animals, injured animals, or other urgent public safety matters.
If you choose to pick up and take possession of a stray animal, you will be responsible for holding that animal until an Animal Resources Officer is available. No estimated time of arrival will be provided.
This is not unique to Prichard. Animal Control agencies across the country face this challenge every day while balancing limited staffing and a high volume of calls.
The best thing you can do is:
✔️ Report the animal’s exact location.
✔️ Provide a photo if possible.
✔️ Monitor the animal from a safe distance if you are able.
✔️ Allow Animal Resources to respond according to priority.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we work to serve both our residents and the animals in our community.
