The science of grassland ecology and associated disciplines in agriculture and biology firmly recognize the significance of fire in the history of the grassland ecosystem, and the persistent necessity of fire in that system today. However, in a modern day of landscape fragmentation and private land ownership and the rights thereof, it is also recognized that fire cannot be allowed in its historica

l sense of large fires on lightening origin to sweep vast areas of the landscape. It is paramount for continued use of fire as a land management tool, that prescribed burns be carefully planned and executed such that they stay within the planned boundaries. Prescribed Burn Associations are playing an increasing role, as they present a formal framework to pool experience, planning, man-power, and equipment in a neighbor-help-neighbor community-based setting - greatly aiding in effectively burning more acres in a safer manner than previously done.

An updated flyer that summarizes Reno Co. burn requirements. Please take the time to understand these, particularly when it comes to stand-alone brush piles and those specific requirements, versus brush piles included in a greater burn unit. While impossible to devise a resolution that fits every situation, these regulations were drawn from the best available information, with a balance of burn needs on the land and public safety. It is our duty as citizens and land stewards to apply fire responsibly and within the county parameters.
