On December 31, 2023, the HEALing Communities Study came to an end. The University of Kentucky, state partners, and local coalitions are now working hard to sustain components of the study. They are also analyzing study data to help our communities, our state, and the nation find ways to best address the opioid overdose crisis.

This page will close at the end of May, but don’t worry! You can still receive updates and access HEALing Communities Study resources through our newly launched website: https://healingstudy.uky.edu/. Visit your community page to download a resource guide, access county-specific data dashboards, and view photos of the incredible work we achieved together.

Join us for UNSHAME Kentucky’s next webinar on Thursday, Thursday, June 30 at 12PM CT/1PM ET!

“Improving OUD Treatment for LGBTQ+ Communities” will include a presentation on the societal, familial, internal, and clinical influences on members of the LGBTQ+ community experiencing opioid use disorder (OUD).

Members of the LGBTQ+ community experience substance use disorder at a higher rate than non-LGBTQ+ individuals. To reach this marginalized group, advocates and care providers must make more inclusive, culturally sensitive treatment options and community spaces available to the public that make individuals feels safe and secure.

Featured speakers include Dr. Brian Hurley (he/him), MD, MBA, DFASAM, FAPA, Addiction Physician and Medical Director of the Division of Substance Abuse Prevention and Control in the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health; President-Elect of the American Society of Addiction Medicine - ASAM and aaron guldenschuh-gatten (he/him), MA, Assistant Executive Director of Recovery Cafe Lexington.

Together, we’ll review the minority stress model and mental and physical health disparities affecting LGBTQ+ individuals, explore opioid use disorder in the LGBTQ+ population and available community resources, and evaluate individual and agency practices for LGBTQ+ affirming support services. This event is free and open to all. ASL interpretation and CART provided.
