Thompson's Harbor State Park is a 'wilderness' park, with miles of trails, kayaking, hunting, and birding opportunities. There are two well finished trails, with stunning views of Lake Huron, and many miles of less traveled trails for those who want to explore the dunes, get closer to wildlife, and enjoy hundreds of varieties of trees and plants. A Michigan Recreation Passport is required for entr
y into the park. Thompson’s Harbor State Park is home to the Dwarf Lake Iris- the Michigan State Wildflower!! The Dwarf Lake Iris has been placed on the Endangered Species List and is both a state and federally Threatened Species. The only place in the world the Dwarf Lake Iris grows is on the northern shores of both Lake Huron and Lake Michigan. Thompson’s Harbor State Park may possibly have the largest population of the Dwarf Lake Iris in the world. It is illegal to disturb this flower, so it is extremely important to tread lightly while in the park. Do not pick the Dwarf Lake Iris or disturb the area around the flowers. Because of sensitive wildlife such as the Dwarf Lake Iris:
1) Please stay ONLY on established trails!
2) NO bicycles or horses on park trails
3) NO ORVs of any kind are allowed within the park’s boundaries
4) Practice Leave No Trace Principles when in the park
Thompson’s Harbor is on the 'Sunrise Side' of the State of Michigan. The park is located near the 1840 ‘Old’ Presque Isle Lighthouse, the 1870 ‘New’ Presque Isle Lighthouse, the Presque Isle Range Light (three fully restored pieces of Michigan history which are open to visits from the public), as well as the nearby Presque Isle Harbor and Presque Isle Harbor Association. The main entrance to the park is easily reached off of US 23, between Rogers City and Alpena. You can also access the park off of Old State Road, and off of County Road 638 as you leave Presque Isle. The Friends of Thompson Harbor State Park is a non-profit group that supports the park in various ways, and invites you to become a member. The membership information is posted on our site: http://www.friendsofthompsonharbor.org
