What an extraordinary evening we had at rehearsal last night! It turned out to be an evening beautifully defined by “threes”:
• 3 weeks since our last rehearsal because of regional contest and our board installation dinner
• 3 guests joined us to check out our chorus — and we hope they were intrigued enough to come sing with us again
• 3 generations singing together, as one of our guests was the daughter/granddaughter of current members

And the icing on the cake — Colleen paid forward her “Catch ’em Being Kind” pin to Sherry.
Colleen recognized the countless acts of kindness Sherry quietly carries out behind the scenes on an ongoing basis — serving as our chorus historian, volunteering at The ARK wildlife rescue, and most recently helping procure a memorial bench at The ARK in remembrance of our dear departed member, Shirley Mae. It is people like Sherry who remind us that kindness doesn’t always seek the spotlight, yet its impact shines brightly throughout our chorus and community.
Now the question becomes… who will Sherry “catch” next in a random act of kindness??

Northern Blend took the regional contest stage this past weekend in Kalamazoo~what an unforgettable experience!
Going in, our only goals were to do our personal best, leave it all on the stage, and truly enjoy both the performance and each other. So you can imagine our surprise and absolute joy when we were announced as 2nd place in the Small Chorus Division and 6th place overall!
And the icing on the cake… our incredible director, Tiffany Crawford, was honored with the Regional Novice Director Award!
We couldn’t be more proud, grateful, and inspired. 🩷🎶

The next installment of NBC’s Catch ’em Being Kind campaign is here!
After being “caught” herself, Vicky paid it forward by “catching” Colleen. She wanted Colleen to know just how brightly her kindness shines through in her willingness to step up wherever or whenever there’s a need, whether in our chorus or throughout the community. We all benefit from the example Colleen sets as a true goodwill ambassador!
Now it’s Colleen’s turn to be on the lookout for our next chorus member to “catch” in a random act of kindness. 🧐🩷

Northern Blend is thrilled to announce that, upon our referral and recommendation, one of our very own Harmony Campers has been awarded the Sweet Adelines International $5,000 Bev Sellers Memorial Scholarship!
In 2016, as a 7th grade student, Anastasia was introduced to barbershop harmony when she attended Region 2’s Youth Harmony Camp. She was instantly captivated by the art form and, along with three classmates, formed a quartet that performed at community and sporting events throughout the West Branch area during her junior high and high school years.
Anastasia is currently a sophomore at Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids, where she is pursuing a degree in music education with the goal of becoming a vocal music teacher. In her acceptance letter, Sweet Adelines International shared that “the review committee was sincerely impressed with your qualifications, including your 3.96 GPA, your involvement in Sweet Adelines quartets, and your vision to continue your path as a music educator. Your credentials make you an excellent choice for our $5,000 USD award".
Please join Northern Blend Chorus in congratulating Anastasia on her outstanding accomplishments and on receiving this generous scholarship from Sweet Adelines International. NBC couldn’t be more proud of the small part we’ve played in supporting the future success of this talented young musician!

Member profile... meet Joan!

Having sung lead in 2 choruses before merging with Northern Blend Chorus, Joan is no stranger to barbershop harmony. Joan sang many years with Fenton Lakes Chorus, then joined Sunrise Harmony when she moved north. She earned her 25-year pin in 2019.
Joan grew up in the Detroit area, living on a farm a few years of her young life with her parents and her younger brother. Memories of her childhood include climbing the pear tree in her yard and eating unripe pears which she still prefers to ripe ones. She also remembers riding her pet donkey on the farm. In high school at Farmington Hills, she sang in the choir and was active in Future Nurses. She went on to college to earn her LPN license and later her Registered Nursing degree. She practiced in several hospitals and the District Health Department, but her favorite nursing job was in the Genesee County Jail where she tended the inmates and ran the medical department.
Joan has a son Michael who is a police officer and 2 granddaughters, aged 21 & 24. She also claims her “adopted” son Tom who belonged to her college roommate. She has 4 very happy, spoiled cats with whom she often carries on conversations.
A few years ago, Joan lost her house in a fire, destroying everything. Luckily, she wasn’t home at the time. Her optimistic attitude allowed her to look at her losses as only material. All could be replaced. She now lives in her new home on the same lake on the same lot.
In her spare time, Joan loves to travel. She has taken a Mediterranean cruise where she visited Gibraltar, Rome, Monaco, Spain and Portugal. She has visited all the states except for those on the northeast coast. She also loves to read and is a member of a book club. In addition, she loves horseback riding.
If she had to do it all over again, she wouldn’t change anything except to maybe travel more.
Her love of singing has kept her active in her retirement years. She serves the chorus on the board and is the business manager, scheduling singouts for the group.
