Empty Bowls of Prescott Arizona

Empty Bowls of Prescott Arizona Prescott Empty Bowls supports our quad cities’ food banks with community participation. Guests are invited to a simple meal of soup and bread.

Since 1998 the Prescott Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (PUUF) and the Granite Peak Unitarian Universalist Congregation (GPUUC) have jointly sponsored this community event to feed the hungry. It all began in 1997 when Bobbie Root, a member of PUUF, heard about an Empty Bowls event in Phoenix. That first year, the fellowship members made soup in their own kitchens and served it to neighbors and f

riends in paper bowls at a worship service on hunger. The next year Bobbie, who was a potter, asked her friends to help make ceramic bowls to sell. By the third year, local restaurants, artisans, potters, and many others in the community began to participate in this community service event and it moved to the Courthouse Plaza. With your help, in 2021 alone we raised $17,000 to distribute to local organizations that feed those in need.

“Empty Bowls is an international grassroots effort to fight hunger and was created by The Imagine Render Group. The basic premise is simple: Potters and other craftspeople, educators and others work with the community to create handcrafted bowls. In exchange for a cash donation, guests are asked to keep a bowl as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. The money raised is donated to...organization[s] working to end hunger and food insecurity.” — emptybowls.net

The other weekend, my family and I spent the day Downtown for one of our favorite events, Empty Bowls of Prescott Arizona.

If you’ve never been, it’s a community fundraiser where you choose a handmade bowl, sample soups from local restaurants (shoutout to the Creamy Jalapeño from El Gato Azul 👏), and gather in support of nonprofits working to fight hunger.

It’s more than a fundraiser, it’s a tradition.

Our bowl collection now spans several years, and it’s become a feature point in our kitchen. Every bowl tells a story. A moment. A memory. And every year, we add another.

These are the kinds of events that make me proud to call Prescott home, and grateful for the good people, good food, and good causes that bring us together.

Have you been to an Empty Bowls event in your town? Or do you have a favorite local event you never miss? I’d love to hear it.

So many wonderful photos from the 28th Annual Empty Bowls from a week ago….here are just a few. We look forward to seeing you next year! In the meantime, if you missed the event, keep an eye out for two Prescott Farmers Market bowl sale days in November and December. Those proceeds will also go to the local food banks.

Thanks for the memories! 🥣❤️

We can’t thank you all enough...thank you to those who attended, volunteered, donated, created, cooked, served, played music, wrote about, posted, and participated in some way in the 28th Annual Prescott Empty Bowls! We are still receiving donations (you can still donate on our website!), and will have more bowls at the Prescott Farmers Market later this fall, but early indications are that we will set another record of giving to the local food banks at the end of the year. All thanks to all of you. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you! ❤️🥣
