A dementia-friendly Prescott starts with empathy. It means the bank teller is patient when someone gets confused at the counter. It means the grocery store clerk offers a warm smile instead of frustration when a transaction takes longer. It’s about building a culture where individuals living with cognitive changes can navigate their town feeling safe, understood, and dignified. We all have a part to play!

Dementia wandering isn't aimless walking. It is almost always a purposeful behavior driven by confusion, anxiety, or an unmet need. They might be trying to "go to work" or searching for a childhood home. Watch for early signs like intense pacing, restlessness, or repeatedly asking to "go home" when they are already there. Early recognition is key to keeping them safe.

Keeping individuals with dementia safe from the severe risks of wandering takes community vigilance. If you see someone in Prescott who appears disoriented, inappropriately dressed for the weather, or pacing anxiously, don't just walk by. Approach them gently, ask if they need help finding their way, and be ready to contact local authorities if they are lost. A watchful community saves lives.

Caregiver burnout doesn't always look like a dramatic breakdown. Often, it's silent. It looks like snapping at a loved one, chronic exhaustion even after sleeping, a lingering sense of resentment, or withdrawing from friends. If you are experiencing these signs, it is not a personal failure—it is a glaring signal that you are carrying too much. Taking care of yourself is the most important part of taking care of them.

People often want to help caregivers, but they simply don't know how. The secret? Be specific. Instead of saying "I'm overwhelmed," try saying, "Could you drop off a prepared meal this Tuesday?" or "Could you sit with Mom for an hour on Friday so I can go to the pharmacy?" Give them a concrete task, and you'll be surprised at how quickly they step up.

Respite care—a temporary break from caregiving duties—is not a luxury. It is a strict necessity for your survival as a caregiver. If formal respite care feels out of budget, get creative! Consider forming a "care cooperative" with another local caregiver where you take turns sitting with each other's loved ones for a few hours. A free, zero-cost way to finally get a moment to yourself.

Do you have a neighbor caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's? They are likely exhausted. You can make a massive difference with tiny gestures. Don't wait for them to ask—proactively offer to mow their lawn, pick up a few extra groceries when you go to the store, or drop off a hot meal. Taking one chore off their plate is an incredible gift of support.
