March means Alabama is transitioning from winter to spring! While warmer days are on the way, cooler temperatures can still affect what and when you plant, depending on where you live in the state.

Now is a great time to start preparing your lawn and garden for the growing season ahead. Take a little time this month to plan, prep your soil, and get everything ready so your plants can thrive as spring arrives. In Alabama, March is the time to do the following:

•Fertilize certain shurbs, roses, and grasses
•Plant blackberries
•Check and repair your lawn mower and equipment

🚨 Non-native Periwinkle / Vinca (Vinca major & Vinca minor) is spreading across Alabama and invading natural areas, forests, and home landscapes!
🌿 Leaves are oppositely arranged along the stem, and are often thick and dark green in color, although some cultivars have gold or variegated leaves.
🌸 Flowers are tubular with 4-5 blue to purple petals. A ring of white may be seen where petals meet at the center.
🌱 Both species are evergreen herbaceous perennials that can root at the nodes along the stem, giving the plant a vine-like structure
🌿 Both species are highly tolerant to shade and can form dense mats that outcompete native herbaceous plants
📍 Commonly found in:
Natural areas
Urban and home landscapes
Old homesites
Forests with open or dense canopies
📖 Both common periwinkle (Vinca minor) and big periwinkle (Vinca major) can be found statewide. Brought to North America as an ornamental in the 1700s, vinca has escaped cultivation and become invasive in natural areas. It is still regularly sold as an ornamental groundcover.
🌿 Join the 2026 Year of Alabama Invasive Plants Project to raise awareness, improve identification skills, and take action against invasive plants! Visit www.aces.edu/go/YearofInvasivePlants to learn more and take the pledge.
