In 1994, Bobbie Blanchard began Special Tuesday in honor of her grandson, Beau Porto. Her idea was to provide a few days of carefree fun for special needs children and their families. The event offers food and lots of fun and games. Blanchard's inspiration came from her grandson Beau, who was diagnosed as an infant with a rare metabolic disorder. The disorder caused neurological damage and develop
mental issues. Beau was only 1 of 40 known cases worldwide, 8 of those being in Louisiana. Beau's life expectancy was 5 years old, but he blessed his family with 14 wonderful years before succumbing to his illness in 2000. The first ever "Special Tuesday" was held at Bobbie's home when Beau was aged 7. There were only 5 children in attendance, but the day was so special for them that Bobbie wanted to make sure the fun would continue. She vowed to provide a safe and accepting environment for children with special needs and their families if only for a few days each year, a simple chance to step away from a world that can be cruel and difficult. From those humble beginnings, Special Tuesday has grown to include over 300 people!
