Our Nation’s history (Or World history, for that matter) isn’t pretty. It’s sometimes difficult to hear or read.
When studying history, it is important to understand bias and its possible impact on a historical narrative. History matters and so does its proper telling.
Greatness doesn't mean perfection, and we must learn from both victories and mistakes, justice and injustices, kindness and cruelty. It’s our history and we cannot erase it or ignore it. We must learn from it and grow.

The first step in liquidating a people is to erase its memory. Destroy its books, its culture, its history. Then have someone write new books, manufacture a new culture, invent a new history. Before long the nation will begin to forget what it is and what it was.

History, as nearly no one seems to know, is not merely something to be read.
And it does not refer merely, or even principally, to the past.
On the contrary, the great force of history comes from the fact that we carry it within us, are unconsciously controlled by it in many ways, and history is literally present in all that we do. It could scarcely be otherwise, since it is to history that we owe our frames of reference, our identities, and our aspirations.”
Indeed, everything has a history, and it matters. —James Baldwin

Driftless Development Inc and Prairie du Chien Main Street want to thank everyone that had some part in the 350th Anniversary Event of Marquette and Jolliet's 1673 expedition on June 16-18, 2023 in the city of Prairie du Chien and the surrounding area.
With over 2 years of planning, Prairie du Chien welcomed more visitors for the traditional Rendezvous weekend than ever!

Special thanks to the City of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin and to Crawford County whose significant donations helped made all of the activities possible. This was not a fundraising event for our organizations, but rather a historic community event that everyone could enjoy at virtually no cost. Hence all of the free activities for kids, fireworks, music, etc.

Other sponsors of note for the event were Peoples State Bank, 3M, Potosi Brewing Company, Crawford County Emergency Management, Gundersen Health System, Crawford County Tavern League of Wisconsin, Cabela's, Sports World, Organic Valley, Community First Bank, Dr. Donna Higgins, Crossing Rivers Health, and Fidelity Bank & Trust

Of course, there were many, many other businesses and community members that contributed to making the 350th Anniversary a successful event. Thanks to all.

Our story has come to it's ending.
After the expedition, Father Marquette returned to work among the Kaskaskia Indians at Starved Rock, near present-day Utica, and died in on May 18, 1675, at the age of thirty-nine.
His partner in exploration, Louis Joliet, returned to Quebec, where he married. He was given a land grant of the Island of Anticosti in Quebec and continued to explore the area, including Labrador, on the east coast of Canada. In 1680, Joliet was appointed royal hydrographer (responsible for the scientific study of seas, lakes, and streams) and granted the seignory of Joliet (south of Quebec) in 1697. He died in May 1700 in Canada, and his burial place is unknown.

Our Story
The two explorers were an unlikely pair. Father Jacques Marquette was a studious Jesuit two weeks shy of his 36th birthday. His partner, Louis Joliet was a 27-year-old philosophy student who had become a fur trader.

In two canoes paddled by five voyageurs, Marquette and Joliet left St. Ignace, at the head of Lake Michigan, on May 17, 1673. They crossed Wisconsin between June 1 and June 17, then followed the Mississippi River hundreds of miles south to Arkansas.
On July 16, near the mouth of the Arkansas River across from modern Rosedale, Mississippi, they turned around. They had gone far enough to confirm that the Mississippi drained into the Gulf of Mexico but not so far that they would be captured by the Spanish. On Sept. 30, 1673, they arrived at St. Francis Xavier Mission at modern DePere, Wisconsin.
