Yesterday was planting day at Oak Hill! A HUGE thank you to Clear Brook Farm for donating the bulk of our plants, as well as to Hildene Farm for some herbs and flowers and Bruce LaBonte for donating landscape fabric to help us try to keep the weeds in check! Gardening connects children to nature, builds community and supports mental health and social-emotional well being. Growing their own food helps children understand where food comes from, and they are more likely to try fruits and vegetables that they have grown themselves. We plan to share our garden progress throughout the season, so stay tuned!

We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to Linda Donigan and Emily Gold for inviting our Preschool/Pre-K class to the Solomon Wright Public Library in Pownal for an amazing morning with children's author Stephen Swinburne! Children watched a lively presentation, were read portions of Swinburne's books, sang songs (accompanied by Swinburne on his ukelele) and got to choose a book of their very own to bring home. The event was sponsored by the Children's Literacy Foundation, a nonprofit organization providing free books and inspiring literacy experiences for children across Vermont and New Hampshire. Thanks also to our Bennington County Head Start Partner for transporting us on their bus!

Reading builds vocabulary and language skills, boosts cognitive development and promotes empathy and emotional intelligence. It literally helps build children's brains. Reading with children is so much fun! Children especially love to hear funny sounds or songs when you read to them, and talking with them about the books you read together provides the back-and-forth interactions which help them learn. We encourage everyone to visit your local library and make reading with your child a happy habit!

Ellisa Mattison, one of our talented Preschool/Pre-K educators, has earned her Level IIIB Certificate on the Early Childhood Career Ladder! This requires an Associates Degree in Early Childhood Education. Ellisa is now pursuing a bachelor’s degree at Vermont State University. In addition to her associates degree, Ellisa has also earned a CCV Childcare Certificate. She has over nine years of experience, having served children and families in center-based settings (including previously in Oak Hill’s Ones Room) and as a home provider. Since she rejoined Oak Hill last June, Ellisa has been doing incredible work with our Preschool/Pre-K class. CONGRATULATIONS on your newest achievement, Ellisa!

Mother Nature smiled on us by providing a short break from the rain on Friday for our annual Farm Day! Dozens of children, families, staff and community members came together for this fun Farm to School & Early Childhood event. The morning included live animals, games, activities and a picnic lunch made with local food. Children and families enjoyed seed planting, pickle making, chicken and egg, learning about and observing farm animals, playing in a grain-filled sensory bin, creating their own "milk" painting, corn hole and more. Children had the chance to learn where some of their food comes from and try their hands at making some of their own. A HUGE thank you to the families who attended, our creative staff and the amazing community members who made the day truly special - The Farrington Family and their chickens, Clara Howard and her duck and The Mattison Family and their rabbit. Thank you all for sharing your time, animals and knowledge with us!

"Farm to School and Early Childhood connects children with local agriculture through food, education, and community partnerships...The approach supports healthy eating habits, strengthens the local agricultural economy and creates experiential learning opportunities that engage children in understanding where food comes from and how it can improve their bodies and their communities." (Vermont Farm to School & Early Childhood Network)
