โœจ Gar-geous! โœจ

Okay, we know gar have a bit of a bad rap. They're long, they've got teeth, and their faces... well, let's just say they're unique! ๐Ÿ˜‚ But did you know these prehistoric predators are actually pretty important to our ecosystems? ๐Ÿ’ช

They're NOT the villains they're made out to be! And sometimes, they can even be kinda cute... like this little spotted gar showing off all its colors! ๐Ÿ˜

๐ŸŒŠ Did you know Arkansas is a seasonal home to an ocean-dwelling fish species?

๐ŸŸ The Alabama Shad is Arkansas's only anadromous species. These fascinating fish spend most of their lives in the ocean, feeding and growing, before traveling upstream into freshwater to spawn. Historically, they were abundant in several medium to large flowing rivers within the Mississippi River drainage basin.

๐Ÿ˜ฎ Today, they are one of the rarest fish species in Arkansas, with some still found in the Ouachita River and its tributaries during years when water conditions are just right for them. The juvenile pictured here was collected earlier this summer from the Ouachita River and confirms that this species spawned in Arkansas this year.

โ€œDonโ€™t bite off more than you can chew.โ€ We found this unfortunate longear recently. It tried to eat a crawfish that was too big to swallow. It was already deceased when it was spotted.

The green sunfish is a frequently found fish, in the Natural State. The state record was caught in the 70โ€™s at 1lb 11oz!
