Powhatan Ruritan Club

Powhatan Ruritan Club Powhatan Ruritan Club of Powhatan, VA, was chartered on March 11, 1937. The first Ruritan Club was chartered May 21, 1928, in Holland, Virginia.

Since that first club, Ruritan has grown throughout the United States of America, and in doing so, has become "America’s Leading Community Service Organization." Tom Downing of Suffolk, Virginia, and Jack Gwaltney of Holland, Virginia, are known as the co-founders of Ruritan. Gwaltney and Downing recognized the need for an organization where community leaders could meet and discuss ways to make th

eir community a better place in which to live. The name "Ruritan" was suggested by Daisy Nurney, a reporter for the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot newspaper, and the club’s charter members unanimously adopted "Ruritan" as the organization’s name. The word is a combination of the Latin words for open country "ruri" and small town "tan," interpreted as pertaining to rural and small town life. The Powhatan club was chartered in 1937.

The Powhatan Ruritans welcomed Danielle Fowler, representing "Little Hands", a charity providing items to new mothers in our surrounding area. Surprisingly, they served 10,000 children last year and strive to provide through their partnerships 100,000 diapers a month.
We were also fortunate to have our scholarship recipient Gloria Jamerson and her father visit us before her National Archery Tournament and VA. Tech enrollment in the fall. An outstanding night.

The Powhatan Ruritans were hard at work packing 160 pints of fresh barbecue to deliver for their fundraiser. A few were left over. We thank Tom's market for the meat and the Powhatan Culinary Arts Center for the use of their building.

The Powhatan Ruritans rode out to spend half the day at Lonesome Dove Equestrian Center. Sunny, breezy day with riders enjoying the chance to saddle up with some horses and even a rather large Mule! A potato bar, salad, and brownies were provided. A memorable pre- Memorial Day.
