The Powhatan Lions Club recently welcomed, Theresa, from the Virginia Police K9 Association as our guest speaker. She shared how the organization supports the health, wellness, and quality of life of retired police K9s after their years of dedicated service.

Police K9s perform incredible work, including detecting narcotics, explosives, accelerants, electronics, and human remains, as well as assisting with search-and-rescue missions.

Many retired K9s face significant medical challenges, including arthritis, PTSD, and anxiety, with veterinary expenses often exceeding $10,000 in their final years. Despite their service, no government funding is provided for their food, medical care, medications, or housing after retirement.

To support this worthy cause, the Powhatan Lions Club proudly presented a donation to the Virginia Police K9 Association.

The Powhatan Lions Club is proud to welcome two new members - Lion Judy Jones and Leighton Jones!

Our club continues to thrive because our members invite, encourage, and sponsor new members. This is so important as members move, step away, or pass on. To keep our club strong, we encourage prospective members to visit, learn more about us, and participate in one or more meetings.

Lionism is more than membership—it is a commitment to service, fellowship, and making a lasting difference in the lives of our members and throughout the community we proudly serve.

The Powhatan Lions Club welcomed Powhatan County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Det. Rio Riopedre to our regular meeting to discuss scams currently targeting Powhatan residents. We appreciate Sgt. Det. Riopedre sharing valuable information and practical tips to help our community stay informed and protected.

Many scams targeting older citizens begin with phone calls, emails, or pop-up messages on computers requesting personal information or payment. Scammers may threaten arrest over supposed active warrants, demand payment to avoid jail, instruct victims to place cash or gold bars in mailboxes, or request payment through gift cards for bills or other alleged debts.

Please remember: • Law enforcement agencies will never demand payment to avoid arrest. • Never provide personal or financial information to unsolicited callers or pop-ups. • Be cautious of anyone requesting payment through gift cards, cash, wire transfers, or gold.
