🎒 Fighting Childhood Hunger—One Backpack at a Time! ❤️

The Powhatan Lions Club was honored to welcome Tracy Guion, the new Executive Director of Backpacks of Love, to speak at our recent meeting. Even more special, this incredible organization was founded right here in Powhatan County in 2011 and continues to be headquartered in our community today.

What began with just 23 Powhatan elementary school students has grown into a program serving children throughout Central Virginia. Today, Backpacks of Love works directly with schools in Powhatan, Chesterfield, Henrico, Hanover, Goochland, Buckingham, Amelia and Cumberland counties, as well as the City of Hopewell.

🍎 How does it work? Each weekly food bag contains six meals intended to help a child through the weekend. In some cases, those meals may be the child's primary source of food until returning to school—and the food may also help feed siblings at home.

Tracy also shared some of the challenges that come with serving so many children. At this time, the program is not able to substitute individual food items for specific allergies or dietary needs, but expanding its ability to accommodate those needs is something they would love to work toward in the future.

Backpacks of Love's mission is simple but powerful: eliminate hunger among school-age children in Central Virginia by providing food for their weekends. And there are plenty of ways our community can help—from donating food or funds to packing backpacks, delivering food to schools, hosting food drives and volunteering at events.

We are proud that an organization with such a tremendous regional impact calls Powhatan home, and we appreciate Tracy taking the time to share the Backpacks of Love story with our Lions. 💙💛

🐾 Serving Our Community—Two Legs and Four! 🦁💙💛

The Powhatan Lions Club was pleased to welcome Powhatan Animal Control Sgt. Christine Boczar as our guest speaker at our July 22nd meeting!

Sgt. Boczar shared insight into the important work performed by Powhatan Animal Control, including enforcing state and local animal laws, sheltering and caring for animals in need, and managing pet adoptions to help animals find loving homes.

We appreciate Sgt. Boczar and the entire Animal Control team for their dedication to protecting and caring for the animals of Powhatan County. 🐶🐱🐾

In support of their continued work, the Powhatan Lions Club proudly presented a $300 donation to the Powhatan Animal Control. It’s another way we’re putting our motto, “We Serve,” into action right here at home!

Thank you, Sgt. Boczar, for joining us and for everything you and your team do for our community!
