Roots of 4-H Wednesday!

In 1921-1922 formation of the National Committee on Boys’ and Girls’ Club Work for the purpose of obtaining private support for club work. Private support provided trips, awards and events outside the scope of public funding. A team of Iowa Canning Club girls won a national canning contest in 1922. For their achievements, they were awarded a trip to France where they gave canning demonstrations.

Ever wonder how Powell secured the land we all gather on for the county fair?

According to this vintage article from the Powell Tribune on February 11th, 1926. Big moves were happening in Washington to grant a 23-acre chunk of the Powell townsite over to Park County. Senator F.E. Warren was leading the charge with a bill to officially lock down the land for our county fairgrounds.

But it wasn't a total cakewalk—the public lands committee added a strict "use it or lose it" amendment. If the county failed to use the land for the fair, Uncle Sam could take it right back!

Fun historical nuggets from the page:

The original push started way back in October 1924 by the county commissioners in Cody.

The Shoshone Water users Association jumped on board in early 1925 to back the resolution.

It’s amazing to see the exact moment local history was being written. Who’s ready for the next Park County Fair?
