Dear Blue Ridge Council Scouting Families and Community,

Once again, thank you to everyone who came out last month and made such a huge impact at Camp Old Indian! The energy and dedication you brought allowed us to complete several key projects, but there’s still work to be done—and we need your help as we gear up for our next Work Weekend on February 21-23.

Here’s How You Can Help
We have a full slate of projects lined up for the weekend, and whether you have carpentry skills, trail-clearing experience, or just a willingness to pitch in, there’s something for everyone!

Project List for February 21-23:
✅ Begin remodeling bathhouses
✅ Build stands for 5-stand sporting clays at the target ranges
✅ Power wash cabins and picnic tables
✅ Build new picnic tables
✅ Power wash and replace seats at the Chapel
✅ Inspect and cull mattresses as needed
✅ Cut live edge lumber from fallen trees using the portable sawmill
✅ Begin repairs to damaged Adirondacks and shelters
✅ Clear campsites of debris and brush, work on erosion control
✅ Reestablish drainage ditches
✅ Clear debris in and around the Chapel
✅ Chainsaw team to clear trails (must have certification)
✅ Cut tipi poles and totem poles from fallen trees
✅ Begin repairs to the second lake fishing dock (rails and flooring)

Ship 142's meeting today was successful, what was discussed and accomplished are as follows:
* Figured transportation for Winter fest 2025 in Gatlinburg.
* Will be performing the flagship ceremony again with greater explanation at Winter fest.
* Signed up to do Escape rooms and the cardboard regatta at Winter Fest.
* March 23rd will be a work day at Camp Arrowhead, Plans are to help Jayden L. complete two of his goals for his Wood badge which include setting the Quarter Tern ship in a permeant position and modify the mast to be a flagpole. This will serve as a flag raising area for the camp and a spot for scouts to do mock boat repair.
* In conjunction with Jayden's Wood badge, the Facebook group will be revitalized and the creation of an Instagram page is in the plans.
* discussed having meetings more often, dates are TBD.

Scouting U has just released a FAQ on Hazardous Weather Training. In 2017, Hazardous Weather Training was made mandatory for all Direct Contact Leaders, however, completion of this training has not been reflected in the training reports. Effective the week of December 2, 2024, this training will be reflected in training reports.

Who is required to complete Hazardous Weather Training?
All Direct Contact Leaders are required to complete Hazardous Weather Training to be considered “trained” in their position.

Does Hazardous Weather Training expire?
Hazardous Weather Training is valid for two years.

How will leaders be notified about the expiration of their Hazardous Weather Training?
Leaders will receive an email notification of their expiration date, from my.scouting (similar to Youth Protection emails). Leaders can also see their training status in their my.Scouting account under My Training. Direct Contact Leaders must complete Hazardous Weather training every two years to retain “trained” status.

Den Leader
Asst. Den Leader
Scoutmaster
Asst. Scoutmaster
Crew Advisor
Associate Advisor
