The Central City Police Department wants residents—especially parents and caregivers—to be aware of products containing 7-hydroxymitragynine, commonly called 7-OH.
These products are being sold over the counter at some gas stations, convenience stores, smoke shops, and online. They may come in brightly colored packages as gummies, tablets, drink mixes, powders, or liquid shots, making them appear similar to ordinary supplements or energy products.
Do not mistake easy availability for safety.
The FDA describes concentrated 7-OH as a potent opioid that can be more powerful than morphine. It has not been approved by the FDA for any medical use, and the FDA recommends that consumers avoid it. Reported dangers include addiction, seizures, withdrawal symptoms, and slowed or stopped breathing. This warning specifically concerns concentrated or enhanced 7-OH products—not the trace amounts naturally occurring in kratom leaves.
Signs of a possible opioid overdose include:
• The person cannot be awakened
• Slow, shallow, or stopped breathing
• Pinpoint pupils
• Blue or gray lips, fingertips, or skin
• Gurgling or choking sounds
If you suspect an overdose:
Call 911 immediately.
Give naloxone—commonly known as Narcan—if available.
Begin rescue breathing if trained, or place the person in the recovery position if they are breathing.
Stay with the person until emergency help arrives.
Narcan may wear off before the opioid does, so emergency medical attention is still necessary even if the person wakes up.
