Here at RAD, we teach all aspects of horsemanship, training, education and riding. Jack has been learning how to round pen and is having so much fun, he even came up with his own little tune! Working and bonding with the horses on the ground is just as important as riding and creates a more well-rounded connection between horse and rider.

Time for an update from our community partner, SDG&E! Be prepared in case of an earthquake or other natural disaster. Walk through your home to identify items that could fall when shaken, then secure those items. You can also secure your water heater to the wall, install earthquake shut-off valves, install latches on kitchen cabinets and brace electronic items like TVs with straps. For more safety ideas, visit EarthquakeCountry.org.

This June we started our 2nd Stable Connections Program with Steadfast Foster and Adoptive Support! We are very excited to partner with Sarah and Steadfast to assist the community together! Sarah, a foster mom herself, recently shared how much the ranch and this program mean to her. She shared "the ranch is truly therapy for me. I look forward to seeing Duke and all the horses all week long. It definitely calms my nervous system."

We are hosting 4 entirely new families out at the ranch to engage with and learn about horse care, bonding, feeding, grooming and more. Ages range from 3-10! The program is not only beneficial for the children but also the parents and the entire family unit as well. The entire family is encouraged to attend so they can all partake in the activities and learn together.

This is just one aspect they are offering their clients and they have many great programs going. We look forward to working together and are hoping to get multiple sessions going per week.

Sven and Duke have become the best of friends. Sven was so into the grooming he didnt even notice a person filming behind him. 🀣

Horses are herd animals with a need for companionship and socialization. Social time prevents isolation and provides essential mental and physical benefits, including reduced stress, natural behavior reinforcement, and stronger herd bonds.

Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting the Poway Chamber of Commerce Nonprofit meet and greet. Chamber members came out to the ranch and we conducted our meeting with the help of our equine team! We had a great meeting, wonderful time connecting with members, met new people and got a little equine love ourselves. Thank you to our awesome volunteers for helping run this event. Until next year!

Angie is awesome! Angie is the perfect example of using your senses and trusting the bond and connection you have with your horse. Angie has been riding with us since 2023. In that time, Angie has been learning to groom and tack up her horse, ride independently, began working with the horses on the ground and in the round pen, joined our show team and continues learning all aspects of horsemanship. Angie enjoys both riding and working with the horses on the ground as she feels building the connection from the ground up is super important! We agree! Way to go Angie!

Atlas and his favorite pastime: getting a massage! 🀣

Our horses are truly spoiled, to say the least, and we wouldn't have it any other way. As our dedicated equine partners, they work incredibly hard in their therapy sessions and lessons, so they absolutely deserve a little R&R.

Watch as Juliette gives Atlas some extra love and a relaxing massage, and be sure to look closely to see him drift off to sleep right in the cross-ties! It’s the ultimate sign of a happy, well-loved horse.

Atlas is generously sponsored by Jake A & Rotary Club of Poway Scripps.

Welcome to the RAD family, little Piper girl! We are so excited to introduce our newest team member, a 12-year-old Quarter Pony. Piper comes to us from her loving owner, McKenna, right here in the San Diego area. After spending her career trail riding and competing in dressage, an unforeseen hock injury meant she needed a slightly slower pace of life, and we are honored that McKenna chose our program for her.

It took Piper a little time to settle in when she arrived a few months ago, but she is now an incredibly solid and sweet addition to our herd. Whether she is assisting with unmounted lessons, participating in our foster care program (where she patiently stands to be painted for hours!), or giving rides to the little ones around the ranch, she has truly found her place. Help us give Piper a warm welcome to the RAD family!

Piper is sponsored by Rotary Club of Rancho Bernardo and Heidi and Cay Bohnsack. Thank you!

With our new cow neighbors, we had to switch gears and do some unmounted lessons this week. Unmounted horse lessons are just as important as riding lessons because they build the knowledge, confidence, and horsemanship skills that make riding safer and more effective. Riding is only one part of working with horses, understanding the horse itself is equally valuable.

Some key benefits of unmounted lessons include:

~Horse Behavior and Communication – Learning how horses think, react, and communicate helps riders build trust and develop a stronger partnership with their horse.
~Safety Skills – Students learn safe handling practices, how to approach and lead a horse, recognize warning signs, and respond appropriately in different situations.
~Horse Care and Management – Grooming, tacking up, feeding, health care, and stable management teach responsibility and deepen appreciation for the horse's well-being.
~Confidence Building – Many riders feel more comfortable around horses when they understand them on the ground first. This confidence often translates into better riding.
~Inclusivity and Accessibility – unmounted activities allow participants to continue learning and benefiting from equine interaction even when riding isn't possible due to weather, health, or scheduling considerations.

At RAD, unmounted lessons can be especially powerful because they promote communication, emotional regulation, teamwork, leadership, responsibility, and meaningful connections with the horses. Many participants develop life skills and confidence through grooming, leading, and caring for horses that are every bit as valuable as the skills learned in the saddle. Check out Katie and RJ giving a prime example!
