Tomorrow, May 25, 2026, the Bedford Hills Fire Department invites the entire community to join us for our annual Memorial Day Parade as we come together to honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation.

The parade will begin promptly at 9:00 AM at the intersection of Glenn Road and Babbitt Road and will proceed down Church Street.

Our first stop will be at the World War I Honor Roll at the Community House for a wreath laying ceremony and gun salute. The parade will then continue down Main Street into Depot Plaza for an additional wreath laying ceremony, gun salute, and the playing of Taps.

We are also honored to welcome local resident and military veteran, U.S. Army Sgt. Timothy Gould, who will deliver this year’s keynote address.

While the weather forecast may not be ideal, the wreath laying ceremonies and gun salutes at both memorials will take place regardless of weather conditions. If necessary, the keynote address will be held inside the Bedford Hills Fire Department.

All members of the community are encouraged to attend as we remember and honor those who gave their lives in service to our country.

On May 22, 2026, President Donald Trump announced that Welles Crowther, a Scouting alum known as “The Man in the Red Bandana,” will be posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.

Crowther was 24 years old and working on the 104th floor of the South Tower during the September 11 attacks when he repeatedly returned into smoke-filled stairwells to guide others to safety. Survivors later described a young man wearing a red bandana over his face who helped lead them down to safety. He is credited with saving as many as 18 people before losing his life when the tower collapsed.

The announcement was made during a rally in Rockland County, New York, alongside Representative Mike Lawler. President Trump described Crowther’s actions as legendary and highlighted his courage and selflessness. Crowther’s mother, Alison Crowther, also spoke and shared how his legacy continues to inspire people around the world.

Today, his red bandana is preserved at the National September 11 Memorial and Museum, serving as a lasting symbol of courage, service, and sacrifice.

Boy Scouts is the traditional Scouting experience for youth in sixth grade through high school. Service, community engagement and leadership development become increasingly important parts of the program as youth lead their own activities and work their way toward earning Scouting’s highest rank, Eagle Scout.
Scouts is a year-round program for youth 11-17 years old that provides fun, adventure, learning, challenge, and responsibility to help them become the best version of themselves.
In Scouts BSA, young men go places, test themselves, and have one-of-a-kind adventures that can’t be found anywhere else.
Eagle Scout is the highest achievement or rank attainable in the Scouts BSA program of the Boy Scouts of America. Since its inception in 1911 only only about six percent of all Scouts earn Eagle Scout rank, which has been earned by over 2.5 million youth. The Eagle Scout rank shows that a Scout embodies Scout BSA qualities of trustworthiness, loyalty, helpfulness, friendliness, courteousness, kindness, obedience, cheerfulness, thriftiness, bravery, cleanliness, and reverence. Eagle Scouts embody the Scout Law and that makes them a person of strong character.

Scout year round activities-

Camping
Scouts attend monthly campouts from September through July, every campout is a no-phone adventure.
In Summer, Scouts attend a 1 week scout summer camp program in July.
In winter months Dec-Feb- scouts will camp in Scout Cabins and incorporate Skiing, Tubing or other winter related activities
Community Service and Community Outreach
PR Troop 1 is honored to have ranked over 75 Eagle Scouts since inception. In the past 5 years we have seen 5 Eagle Scouts rank donating projects to our community including: Cemetery Replantings and new benches, Veterans Memorial Wall in Pound Ridge Park, Fishing Kiosk at Pound Ridge Town Park, nature blind in Mongenthua Preserve and the latest Trail Bridge at Bye Preserve.
In Fall and Spring we do a food drive collecting over 1400 Lbs of food and about $1500 for the Mount Kisco Food Pantry.
Leading up to memorial day, the troop does weeding and clean up at the Pound Ridge Town Cemetery and replaces flags for veterans across three local Cemeteries in Pound Ridge and Bedford.
The troop supports local veterans marching in the annual Memorial day parade and placing a wreath for the Pound Ridge Memorial Ceremony.
Troop completes an annual fundraiser recycling trees for the community.
Leadership development
As part of the Scouting program, scouts get many opportunities to develop leadership skills, including Troop leadership rolls,
Community leadership leading projects or representing the troop in a community event
Leadership development courses are available to Scouts as well
Skilling

Throughout the scouting year Scouts get the opportunity to learn many life skills at troop meetings, campouts and through completing merit badges. These skills are then practiced and taught to other youth scouts to help maintain the skill and include:
Cooking, cleaning and survival skills
fire building, first aid, CPR, fire safety, ice and water rescues
Knots, hiking and navigation skills with compass and maps
Engineering, woodworking, metalworking, architecture and financial management

Troop 1 was founded in 1944. Since its inception Troop 1 has had a total of seventy five Scouts earn the rank of Eagle.
