Free to Be is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal sanctuary with a mission to provide lifelong care to animals of breeding or farmed captivity, neglect, or cruelty. We believe all life is deserving of respect, and through rescue, outreach, and community we can help make for a simpler world. We know that every minute of every day there is an animal in need of sanctuary, and FTB is a forever home to those who can be rescued.

It only took 5 minutes out of the barn to sport this look this morning, and Danny is determined it’ll stay all day. With the rain we’ve had, this is will be no problem at all.

Chester ❀️. Chester is : stable.
A update that he & we needed, after battling mobility changes, an internal foot infection, and multiple vet visits for over 2 months. To be honest, we didn’t think he would make a full recovery without significant impact, but he proved us wrong. I’ve never been more happy to be wrong. You can see his middle to on his left foot is where the infection was and remains larger in comparison to his right, but compared to how his foot was previously and the swelling & heat, it is a noticeable, noticeable difference. This chapter isn’t closed for Chester because we continue to monitor (as we always do daily) for any changes or return infection, but with in-house made supportive shoes he is able to do away with the wheelchair and for that - he is a happy boy.

Caring for someone with needs like Chester requires physical time to treat, creativity to think of ways to support his body’s needs, patience, hope, researching, proper vet care, and commitment to his health. Yes Chester is a special boy being one of the first ducks at Free to Be, but this is the level of care given, when needed, to every single being in our care. No exceptions.

Chester is incredible, and I wonder if Phil sees that too. Right behind him in the photo just like he’s been right by his side since day one.

Any guesses who is behind the expressive splash attacks?

We had been anticipating Billie & Opal for months while some details were being worked out, but because they had rescuers that never gave up, the two best friends have found the supportive place they’ve always deserved. Coming from a 4H camp with limited monitoring, they were the only ducks on the property and paired with Opal’s diagnosis, that setting was not enough. Here, they will be in a much smaller flock, and in a space that is designed specifically for ducks & being monitored more closely. Finding their freedom, and together, is the best gift this life could have given them.

Oreo’s favorite activity is energetically destroying every single type of mat placed in this corner. It’s time we try something different and are testing out an (inexpensive) washable carpet runner, low pile.
So far, it’s been safe for 24 hours. Progress updates will be provided.

Taking a brief break from filling waters & today’s project to show our new growing bed for flowers that we had started a few months ago, laying cardboard down to kill the grass. Miraculously, this design actually went just as planned. I know, that’s something, right?! We opt not to till our gardens as a means to preserve existing soil structure & biome, but in order to set up the bed for success we did have to scrape the surface to remove weeds & unwanted growth. Next step is filling with flowers of all kinds for bouquets on the farmstand!

While this project doesn’t directly impact the residents in a straight and narrow way, it does help them in a round about way because any monetary amount left at the farmstand goes right back into the sanctuary & residents. Making the distinction that Morgan & myself operate the farmstand separately from the sanctuary ensures donations 𝘴𝘡𝘒𝘺 within the sanctuary, and everything needed for the farmstand (seeds, growing supplies, etc) is always out of our own pockets. We love when we hear about folks stopping by the stand + following the sanctuary, because it’s double the impact and full circle. We care so much for every single resident, and so much of what we do both on & off social media is wrapped around making the lives better for everyone here. It is a lot, but they deserve the world, and we would not have it any other way.

It may be dreary out there but the veggie starts are vibrant! The farmstand is offering today rosemary, basil, green & yellow squash, and multiple varieties of tomatoes, cucumbers & hot peppers. We have much more basil than what’s in the stand, so go herb happy! Everything on the stand supports Free to Be animal sanctuary and is take what you need, pay what you can.

Did you know planting in (moderately) rainy weather can many times be beneficial? The soil will already be hydrated & cloud coverage reduces strong direct sun on the young transplants, both of which can reduce the stress/risk of transplant shock that is quite common. While there is a lot to gardening, don’t forget - to have fun & get creative! Gardening is what you make of it, no matter the size.
