We had a wonderful time celebrating St. Patrick's Day with some karaoke-style singing of Norwegian drinking songs in the Troll's Den of our Poulsbo Sons of Norway Lodge. We look forward to doing it again!

Our Fall Season Begins This Thursday, Sept. 5, as we resume our weekly singing from 7:00 to 8:30 pm at the Sons of Norway in Poulsbo.

You may be surprised at the variety of Scandinavian music that exists although, with a history so much longer than ours in the U.S., it’s understandable.

From at least the time of the Vikings, music was highly regarded. It ranged from tunes about everyday life to epic music about great events and legendary sagas. Sometimes music was even believed to hold supernatural power.

The harp, or lyre, was a commonly used in Scandinavian music. A variety of horns were developed, including pipes, trombones, and the “lur,” used for signaling as well as herding. As early as the 1300s, Norse people loved the fiddle.

With the Catholic Church and later the Lutheran Church, formal religious music became part of Norwegian life.

Much later, as you’re probably aware, Edvard Grieg and his contemporaries composed a great body of music. And now, just as in the US, there are many wonderful modern composers, such as Ola Gjeilo.

There is so much more that can be said about Norwegian music!

To fully experience it, join us in singing on Thursday evenings. Christmas time is coming very soon, so we'll begin right away in exploring some fun Juletid music.

It can be challenging to learn Scandinavian lyrics as well as the music, but we're all patient with each other as we enjoy experiencing this important facet of Norwegian culture. (By the way, we do sing songs in English as well.)
