At Poughkeepsie Children’s Cabinet, we are guided by our North Star: that by 2033, 5,000 children across the PKGO will be on pathways to socioeconomic mobility.

But how does a child decide what their North Star is? How can we nurture the dreams and interests of children across the City of Poughkeepsie so they can discover the opportunities and pathways in life that truly fulfill them?

Enter Niknesha, the Poughkeepsie Children’s Cabinet’s first Youth Navigation Coordinator. Her work spans a lifetime as an educator, youth leader, and creative, serving as a quarterback for children inside and outside the classroom and helping them realize the best version of themselves. In her work with the Cabinet, Niknesha will partner with the school district and youth-serving organizations to connect children to the enrichment programs that matter most to them.

Youth navigation is what leads to youth success. More than ever, children need caring, trusted adults who can help them navigate a rapidly changing world. In Poughkeepsie, we’re embracing a future led by youth. It starts by ensuring every young person grows up in a city where opportunity feels within reach and every child graduates high school on a path to success.

At Poughkeepsie Children’s Cabinet, we are guided by our North Star: that by 2033, 5,000 children across the PKGO will be on pathways to socioeconomic mobility.

“What programs are available for my child after school?””How can I find the right opportunities for my child and how do I actually get my child connected?”

You’ve come to the right place. Meet one of our newest hires, Carl Acevado.

Carl is our organization’s first Out-of-School Time Coordinator. In this role, he wears many hats. He helps match programs to young people’s interests, works with youth-serving organizations to identify the needs of Poughkeepsie youth, and collaborates with our Community Partnership Director to expand pathways for children and families across the city.

Children spend up to 80% of their waking hours outside of school, and too often, parents are overwhelmed by the process of navigating resources, programs, and opportunities. In Poughkeepsie, we’re fortunate to have an incredible network of out-of-school time partners, including Community Matters 2, Inc., The Art Effect, Family Services, Charlia Frank Inc. , and many more.

Children deserve the support and encouragement to pursue their interests wherever they may lead. That’s the critical gap Carl helps fill. He has spent the last three years building relationships with young people and youth-serving organizations throughout Poughkeepsie from his role at the Boys and Girls Club. He’s passionate about youth development and excited to help connect children from across the city with the programs that will help them take the next step in their journey.

There is a room in Poughkeepsie this July where the people who spend their days showing up for our young people will come together.

Program directors. Youth workers. Executive directors. School leaders. Funders. Community partners.

This summer in Poughkeepsie, we’re making every day count.

30 Days of Summer is here - bringing creativity, adventure, and community to life at Malcolm X Park. This is where the city gathers, and this summer it belongs fully to the young people who show up, create, move, and make it their own.

From art and science to nature, movement, and hands-on discovery, young people will step into a month filled with possibility, expression, and joy, right in the heart of the park.

In partnership with incredible local organizations, we’re opening the door to experiences designed for exploration, connection, and belonging. Every day is a chance to try something new, meet someone new, and step fully into what’s next.

At the Poughkeepsie Children’s Cabinet, we are proud to work with DAY ONE Early Learning Community - a powerful network of teachers, families, and community partners on a mission to help every child thrive from the very beginning. Co-founded by Geraldine Laybourne, Julie Reiss, and Rebecca Edwards, and led by Executive Director Madeline Henriquez, DAY ONE is building a model early learning ecosystem in Poughkeepsie where educators and caregivers can nurture each child’s potential.

We’re excited to celebrate DAY ONE’s role in supporting the Governor Hochul Child Care Pilot, a project that will help expand the Teacher Apprenticeship Pathway (TAP) Program and strengthen the early childhood workforce in our community. In addition to TAP, DAY ONE operates the Early Learning Center, hosts playgroups for families, and leads parent and community engagement programs that support caregivers at every stage of early child development.

Partnerships like this are fundamental to we build a stronger early childhood system in Poughkeepsie. Together, we’re proud to support the work that helps our youngest residents grow, learn, and begin their educational journeys with the care and community they deserve from day one.

🍕🍦 Earlier this month, the Choice Community Ambassadors led an afternoon of pizza, ice cream, and community visioning on the Walkway Over the Hudson.🍕🍦

Residents of Martin Luther King and Thurgood Marshall Terrace Apartments shared the parks, gathering spaces, and places that make Poughkeepsie feel like home. Together, we created a community map and imagined what new spaces, opportunities, and connections could expand the neighborhood in the years ahead.
