Not many will understand the magnitude and the pain of walking the hospital Halls knowing it's the end stage for your parents...

I had to do it for my mother, and years later I had to do it for my father too, but the experiences were completely different. I am grateful for both because the Lord chose me to be the one standing in those hospital halls.

I remember the day I had to sign the DNR for my mother. She was incarcerated and dying in a prison hospital. We were only allowed to see her three hours a day, and that time had to be divided among family. Anyone who hadn't visited her during the ten years she served of her 50-to-life sentence was not allowed to come see her. The warden's reasoning was simple: if they hadn't visited her in ten years while she was incarcerated, why would they visit her now as she prepared to slip into a coma?

I remember walking out of that hospital knowing I would never hear my mother's voice again.

It is a silent pain that is difficult to describe.

A year before she died, I had written her off. I was angry. Angry that her choices had caused her to miss so much of my life. But life can move forward through forgiveness.

That is why I created Behind the Chair Foundation and the Amarylis Scholarship for Higher Learning in her memory. They are my way of carrying forward a legacy of forgiveness, hope, love, strength, courage, resilience, and redemption.

I no longer carry the pain of losing her the way I once did. Instead, I help her legacy live on by serving others and helping heal wounds she never had the chance to heal herself while she was here on earth.

I believe her soul is pleased with every child we help, and one day it will be pleased with every woman coming out of incarceration who finds hope, purpose, and a second chance.

That is how I honor my mother.

Last weekend, Behind the Chair Foundation participated in the New Paltz Rotary Touch-A-Truck event, and it was an incredible experience. We connected with so many amazing people, including members of the local Jewish community who appreciated that we are a faith-based nonprofit serving families impacted by incarceration.

Thanks to the generosity of the community, we raised $95, and we're especially grateful to the New Paltz Rotary Club for refunding our $100 vendor fee. Many people commented on how great our booth looked, but the real investment wasn't money...it was community.

Volunteers, supporters, and new connections came together to make the day a success, and we're hopeful many of those relationships will continue to grow.

“Cosmetology didn’t just teach me hair… it gave me purpose, confidence, and a future.
As a child of an incarcerated parent, I could have become another statistic.
Instead, at 17 years old in Dutchess B.O.C.E.S cosmetology program, I found healing behind the chair.

Today, that journey became the foundation of why I fight to help other children know they are not forgotten.”
