"I asked an elderly woman once what it was like to be old and to know that the majority of her life was now behind her.

She told me that she has been the same age her entire life. She said the voice inside of her head had never aged. She has always just been the same girl. Her mother's daughter. She had always wondered when she would grow up and be an old woman.

She said she watched her body age and her faculties dull but the person she is inside never got tired. She never aged. She never changed.

Remember, our spirits are eternal. Our souls are forever. The next time you encounter an elderly person, look at them and know they are still a child, just as you are still a child and children will always need love, attention and purpose."

Friends of Seniors is now closed. Catholic Charities took over on August 1, 2023. They kept the same phone numbers: office is 845-485-1277; cell phone is 845-240-0241. If you need assistance, call either of those two numbers.

Spring is here!

ROBIN IN THE SNOW

How long the winter seems each year,
Unrelenting, cold and drear.
We hunker down near hearth and home,
While windows rattle, chimneys moan

With wind that cries against a fate
That keeps it from the warming grate,
And sweeps it backward from the light
Into the unforgiving night.

Sometimes, we too, grow old inside,
From saddened heart or trammeled pride,
And like the wind feel blown away.
Alone, abandoned, nature's stray.

Forgetting for a time that strife
Is just one season in our life.
Spring does come - oh this I know -
I saw a robin in the snow.

Friends of Seniors is in dire need of volunteer drivers. Being fully aware that there is no social-distancing inside a car, we are providing all volunteers with N95 masks. Please call 845-485-1277 or email [email protected]. Thank you!

To end this long, grueling year on a positive note, someone once again anonymously donated $500 to Friends of Seniors - an excellent start to 2021. Thank you for your kindness and your generosity. God bless you! HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

Hi Everyone! Friends of Seniors is still in business during this very difficult time. We are still driving as many seniors as we can to their essential medical appointments. We are still providing grocery shopping services. And the volunteers are now calling our clients who are more isolated than ever to check in on them to see how they are managing. If you know a Dutchess County senior who might need assistance, please tell them to call 845-485-1277. Thank you!

Friends of Seniors volunteers have done it again! They drove 93,772 miles to 3,734 medical appts. in the Hudson Valley as far north as Albany and as far south as NYC, and all points in-between - for a total of 5,912 trips. A trip is one-way and includes any extra stops to the bank, pharmacy, etc. They also drove clients to the grocery store, to their homes for visiting and respite for primary caregivers. They assisted - on average - 122 people per month, and donated 8,017 hours of their own time. Total number of Dutchess County senior citizens assisted came to 310. Obviously most used our service more than one time.

The staff is equally remarkable, keeping all of this together.

GOD BLESS THEM ALL!

And we are in our 16th year, and our services are still FREE to the Dutchess County older adult community.

We need more volunteers! Friends of Seniors has over 100 volunteers, and yet, we don't have enough volunteers to meet the requests for our services. We receive well over 100 requests per WEEK for assistance. If you are interested in volunteering, please let us know. The volunteer time is what you choose - no pressure.

If you wish to make a tax-deductible donation, our address is 9 Vassar St., Ste. #24, Poughkeepsie, 12601-3022; phone is 845-485-1277; email is [email protected]; website is friendsofseniors.org.
