Memorial Day
Monday, May 25
Parade line-up, 8:30 to 9:15 a.m.: New location at Pine Street Arena!
This year, the parade line-up will be held in the parking lot at Pine Street Arena, 43 Pine St., Potsdam, NY.
The arena will be open and available for participants to use the restroom, warm up musical instruments, etc.
Flag-raising, 9:15 a.m.
This year, the Village would like to honor the memory and legacy of Steven J. Riggs, a Potsdam native who gave his life in the Vietnam War. The American Heroes Flagpole Foundation donated and dedicated a flagpole in Mr. Riggs' memory at Pine Street Arena last fall. We will hold a brief flag-raising ceremony with the playing of taps to begin the day. All parade participants and members of the public are welcome.
Parade kick-off, 9:30 a.m.: New route
In order to incorporate the flag-raising and to avoid downtown construction, the village will utilize a new parade route this year. The parade will leave from Pine Street Arena and head down Pine Street, then cross the intersection with Sandstone Drive/Rt. 11 over to Maple Street (in front of Kinneys), and then continue on Maple Street across Fall Island to Ives Park. Walking groups part in the ceremony can continue directly to Ives Park, with vehicles/floats either parking in the Main Street parking lot or continuing along Main Street to their next destination(s).
Ceremony, 10 a.m.: Ives Park war memorial
The ceremony will be held at the war memorial, located in Ives Park, once again this year, immediately following the parade. Our keynote speaker this year is Abrahm DiMarco, former chair of military science at Clarkson University and an Army veteran. The Potsdam High School marching band will once again be leading our ceremony music and taking part in the parade. The restrooms will also be open at the park.
Please let us know if you have any questions and if you will be interested in participating. Feel free to forward this invitation to community groups that you think may be interested.
Sincerely,
Alexandra Jacobs Wilke
