We have been spreading hay out on different parts of the property in the newly fenced areas to help draw the mustangs to different areas to rotate the land use and let other areas rest and grow.
Our two White Mountain boys Viking (aka Jeriah) and Dragon Heart (aka Maclaurian /Mac) found a quiet spot to themselves where they can relax and do their thing and not have to share their hay with anyone else. These two were best buddies on the range and we were able to keep them together and they are now enjoying a slower paced life here at the sanctuary together.
Some people ask why we don’t feed our hay up off the ground in bale feeders or slow feeder nets. There are several reasons why. One is because we have so many horses we are feeding that it is absolutely not efficient enough for us to feed like that. Too many horses on one feeder would get horses hurt and cause some horses who are on the low end of the social hierarchy to not get any at all. It would cause a lot of fighting and injuries. We like to spread our hay out so that everyone has a fair chance to eat.
Another big reason is that when we unroll these large bales out the seeds from the hay hit the grown and then the very little hay that’s left by the horse along with the manure helps to reseed and fertilize the area and helps with pasture regrowth. It’s an effective and efficient way to manage the pastures and help the areas that take a beating from constant use by the mustangs.
This newly fenced area has been an absolute blessing for the mustangs! They are loving life and we love watching them live it and share it with all of you! If they can’t be free on the range then this is the next best option and they are definitely living their next best life! Thank you for always helping us make this all possible for them! It takes a village!
