"Empathy begins with understanding life from another person's perspective. Nobody has an objective experience of reality. It's all through our own individual prisms." — Sterling K. Brown

One of the loneliest feelings in the world is carrying a story that no one else seems to understand. That's the weight a lot of people bring through our gates — not broken, not beyond hope. Just unseen.

There's a painting that hangs in my office — created by the talented Tammy Tappan — called "To Be Seen." It's a beautiful image of a horse, and it's a daily reminder of what we hope our client's experience when they come to the barn.

Horses have a way of doing just that. Seeing us for who we are. Meeting us where we are — no agenda, no judgment, no pretense. No words needed. Just presence. Just truth.

Healing doesn't happen when someone fixes you. It happens in relationship — when someone finally sees you clearly enough to walk alongside you.

Real relationships require something of us. They ask us to slow down, to set aside our own assumptions, and to truly see the other person — without judgment, without agenda. Just honest, authentic connection.

We believe that's where healing lives. Not in a technique or a diagnosis — but in that space between two beings where something real is allowed to happen.

You deserve to be seen. 🐴

Battling burnout? We've been there. 🐴

Studies suggest as many as 9 in 10 behavioral health workers have experienced burnout, many at moderate to severe levels. Those of us in this field pour so much into the work — and when you add animal-assisted work into the mix, that load doubles. We're not just carrying the weight for our clients; we're carrying it for our animals too.

Here's the thing we always come back to: horses don't know who the "client" is in a session. They don't care about the license you hold or the title on your office door — they're simply responding to the energy and regulation we bring into the arena. Which means our own self-awareness isn't optional. If we haven't done our own work, we risk interfering with the work meant for our clients.

That's the heart of a session I got to present for Horses & Humans Research Foundation's Webinar Wednesday series, now live as a recording! We walk through the HORSES Framework — a reflective supervision model built on the work of Dr. Bruce Perry & Dr. Kristie Brandt (NMRS) specifically for animal-assisted therapy professionals.

If you're a mental health professional, equine-assisted practitioner, or part of an animal-assisted therapy center, this one's worth the watch.

🏔️ Heading to Banff this October!

We're excited to share that Michael will be presenting at the 2026 Pathways to Prevention Symposium, hosted by Hull Services at the Banff Springs Hotel — both at the pre-conference alongside Dr. Bruce Perry, and during the Symposium.

Pre-Conference Session:
"Wired for More: Animal-Assisted Interactions and the Neurobiology of Rhythm and Relationships"

Symposium Session:
"Too Close to Heal: How Animal-Assisted Therapy Navigates the Intimacy Barrier in Relational Trauma"

This gathering brings together some incredible voices in child and family wellbeing, and we're grateful for the chance to be part of it.

If you'll be in Banff this October, we'd love to connect. And if not — we'll be sharing more along the way. 🐴

This week, we had the joy of welcoming friends from the Philippines to Gateway Family Services of Illinois.

They are part of the Neurosequential Network community — a global community of clinicians, practitioners, and helpers who share a deep belief in the same foundational truth: that relationships are at the center of healing.

They came to learn more about how we partner with horses in our therapeutic setting. About how we integrate Dr. Bruce Perry's Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics and Natural Lifemanship into our work with our equine. About why horses, why relationships, why this approach.

We are so grateful for a community that stretches across the world and keeps finding its way back to the same barn. The same truth. The same horses.

Relationships change everything. Across the barn. Across the world. 🌏🐴💙

🙏 Thank you for making the journey. You are welcome back anytime.

Yesterday we mentioned there was something coming up — here it is. 👇

We're honored that Michael will be one of the co-presenters for the pre-conference session at the 2026 Pathways to Prevention Symposium, hosted by Hull Services in Banff, Alberta this October — alongside Dr. Bruce Perry, Myra Sack, and Meghan Ward. Michael will also be presenting during the full symposium, co-presenting a breakout with Dr. Perry on "Wired for More: Animal-Assisted Interactions and the Neurobiology of Rhythm and Relationships."

This year's preconference theme centers on rhythm, healing, and the natural world — and that's a theme close to our hearts. So much of what we do at Gateway, and so much of what we believe about healing, comes back to slowing down, paying attention to relationships, and letting the natural world teach us what it already knows.

If you work in mental health, trauma-informed care, or anywhere in the helping professions — this symposium is worth your time. Banff in October is also just... Banff in October. 🍂🏔️

Come pause with us.
