“There was no money to pay school fees. There was no plan. There was no clear path ahead. As weeks passed, my classmates reported to their schools while I remained at home. Neighbours kept asking when I would be joining high school, but nobody had an answer.
Then one day, everything changed. The phone rang - On the other end was EFAC.”

When EFAC and Dandelion Africa worked together, a young girl, Perpetua, whose dreams and shot at education could have been shattered, had the opportunity to continue her education, discover her purpose, and now pay that forward.

On today’s edition of stories, read “It Takes a Village” by Perpetua Makokha.

'Madaraka' (for Madaraka Day) is a Swahili word that means “Self-Governance.” It speaks of freedom, authority, and the power to be in charge of one's own future.

At EFAC, this is the heart of what we believe in. Through the (empower) model we are empowering bright but disadvantaged young people across Kenya to rise beyond limitations and take charge of their futures with confidence and purpose.

This Madaraka Day, we celebrate not only Kenya’s journey as a nation, but also the incredible potential of young people who are becoming leaders, changemakers, and builders of a better tomorrow.

Happy Madaraka Day from all of us at EFAC. ❤️🖤💚

It's . Today, we celebrate James Muriuki, a proud beneficiary of the Scholarship Program, a peer mentor and alumnus of St. Mary's School and KCA University.

As a mentor to younger EFAC scholars, James expresses his joy in seeing another scholar thrive "For me, mentorship is more than guidance, it is an opportunity to create real impact in the lives of young people - like myself, as they transition into new stages of life. Seeing the younger EFAC Scholars grow and apply what they learn makes my journey deeply fulfilling."

Thank you, James, for selflessly pouring into the next generation, leading with purpose and compassion, and making a lasting difference in the lives of young people.

We celebrate you.

Some dreams survive because someone chose to care.

Consolata’s story begins in the flower farms and wheat fields of Timau - a small village in the Mt. Kenya highlands, where her mother worked tirelessly to keep hope alive, and where small acts of kindness, sometimes from strangers and relatives, often stood between school and giving up.

Today, Consolata wears a nurse’s coat, serving others with compassion and purpose.
This is the heart of the - one act of kindness, one opportunity, one person believing in another, can change a life forever.

Friday means - checking in on some EFAC 2026 highlights.

This year, we welcomed 200 new scholars into the EFAC family, drawn from 43 out of the 47 counties in Kenya and placed across 39 schools nationwide. Even more exciting? 2/3 of this class are girls - scholars who, against all odds, are ready to pursue their dreams.

And the journey continues for our transitioning scholars. 101 scholars are preparing for university and college life, with 92% earning direct university placement.
Freshman life is calling, and we couldn’t be prouder.

We are celebrating another new graduate!🎓

Velma Atieno recently graduated from Ashesi University with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. Velma joined in 2018 courtesy of the EFAC–Shining Hope for Communities partnership.

Even with having to continue her education in Accra, over 3,000 miles away from home in Nairobi, nothing came between Velma and her thirst for success.

On her graduation, she says, “Walking across that stage, receiving my degree, being recognized on the Provost’s List, presenting my capstone project and seeing it all come together was overwhelming in the best way possible. All those late nights and sacrifices finally made sense. Now, I want to step into spaces where I can create impact in a meaningful way.”

Congratulations, Velma. We are super proud of you.

We believe that one story can inspire a whole community, one voice can spark courage and one journey can create a ripple effect that changes lives.

Through this series of Power of One, we will be sharing powerful stories from alumni and scholars whose journeys continue to inspire hope, resilience, and leadership in their communities.

Our first story features Khadija, an EFAC alumna, mentor, and proud daughter of the Nubian community, who is redefining leadership through humility, service, and quiet influence.
Her story reminds us that leadership is not always about being at the front; sometimes the greatest impact happens quietly, through resilience and purpose.

We’re celebrating a new graduate in town, Naomi 🎓

Naomi joined EFAC in 2016, studied at St. Clare Girls’ Elburgon, and, through the EFAC-KENSAP partnership, earned an opportunity to study in the United States. A few days ago, she proudly graduated from Wellesley College with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics.

One of the most special moments of her graduation was reuniting with her sponsor, Janet, who has walked this journey with her over the years. In one of the photos, Janet, EFAC Co-Founders Rod and Nancy Van Sciver, and Naomi share the moment. Surrounded by love, support, and the EFAC family, Naomi celebrated a milestone that once felt so far away.

“Leaving home and moving from Kenya to the United States was definitely challenging, but it feels incredibly rewarding now to finally be graduating after so many years of hard work. It took a lot of effort, perseverance, and support from others along the way, and that’s what makes it so special.” She says.

Congrats Naomi!
